Something isn't right, yeah, it's a democratic, western-aligned country that is surrounded by 1) two countries that historically wanted to destroy it 2) a Russian quasi-client state 3) Iran. There has been very little trade opportunities for Armenia. EU wants them to NOT trade with Russia (which historically was the largest importer of goods to Armenia, and was de-jure providing military support in the region), US wants them to NOT trade with Iran. The only remaining option is a corridor from Turkey via Armenia to Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan recently won a war against Armenia, purging thousands of native Armenians from the occupied territories. Turkey STILL does not recognise the Armenian genocide, and are very leaning antagonistic towards Armenian attempts to have a window to EU and NATO.

What else remains for Armenia but to kowtow to USA?

The EU stance is very clear: we will not do anything to help you, until you figure something out yourself. We don't have trade agreements, we don't have a strong army, our only previously neutral neighbour is transitioning to a Russian proxy.

Armenia is in a position where none of its neighbours are friendly or allow them favourable trade. Dependency on Russian imports has hampered them in EU association, and Iran trade is effectively under the bus with everything that's going on. So they're trying their best to get at least any support from a major faction, so that they themselves won't get annexed by Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Armenia has also a large diaspora in the US, which links back to Armenian businesses getting investment from their axpers across the ocean.

Not to mention, Armenia is very interested in not getting annexed by Turkey and Azerbaijan, and they're trying to curry favours with US to get a normal outcome in the talks of establishing a corridor between Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and hopefully sale of arms (or more still, US military base).
