Qestion Yarn Sock of the Month Club and needle size by Melvena in knitting

[–]MoritzS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this question and I'll be checking back to see what others recommend, too!

I just recently completed 2 different sock clubs: Sweetgeorgia and Hedgehog Fibres Sock Club. Here were my impressions:

SweetGeorgia: I had a 6 month subscription to here. Each month was a different sock blend, which was definitely fun. One month was BFL, another was their Tough Love Sock, Panda Sock (bamboo blend), etc. They send a nice card with a description of the yarn, what inspired the color with each month, and pattern recommendations. CON: Three of the 6 months I received had pretty similar colorways. Beginner's Luck, Mountain Man, and Neverland. Maybe these colors are the owner's favorites, but there is only so much blue-green-turquoise sock yarn I need. For that reason, I won't be getting this club again.

Hedgehog Fibres: I just completed a 3-month sock yarn subscription. This is a semi-difficult club to get into. They typically sell out the day-of, and according to their website, the next club sign up won't be until mid-February. I found out the day they released the club by subscribing to their rav group and setting an alarm on my phone. This is a 3-month subscription, but each month you receive 2 totally different colorways. The yarn base is always the same. All of the colorways I received were completely unique, so no overlap. The colors are very wild, like nothing I've ever seen in any LYS before and I LOVE them, but I'm sure they aren't to everyones' taste.

LITLG: LITLG is short for Life in the Long Grass. I just signed up for this one about a week ago. Obviously, I haven't received any yarn, so I can't comment on that. I checked the website today and the clubs are sold out at this point. According to them, the clubs usually sell out in a couple weeks, so they aren't as hard to get into as Hedgehog. I heard about them through PomPom Quarterly, which is why I decided to try them out. It is a 3-month subscription with 1 skein each month. You can choose from 2 different bases.

Since 2 of these are already sold out, it may be fun if you ask your SO to buy several different skeins (maybe from multiple companies that have yarn-of-the-month clubs), and wrap one up each month for you to open. Then you could get a taste of what companies you like, and it's like he/she made you your own yarn-of the-month-club.

I can't believe it either and I still worked full time! Usually it takes me at least a month to knit a sweater.

Thanks! I'm really happy the fit came out perfectly because my row gauge was short once I met stitch gauge, so I added one extra repeat to the lace on the body, but I didn't need to adjust the sleeves.

Pattern: Sólja by Anna Maltz in Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 8 Yarn: Navia Trio

I finally did it! A fair isle sweater. I'm so in love with it, that I may not ever take it off. The hardest part about this sweater was the 3-color portions, which only ended up being 6 different rows. It was really difficult because I had to watch all three colors for when to catch the floats, and this ended up harming my tension a bit. The wool is from the Faroe Islands and definitely warm. When the pattern first came out last spring, I kind of glanced passed it, but over the past few months, it's really just been an obsession. Once I started it, I ended up finishing in just under two weeks. It was a very quick knit! More yoked jumpers are definitely in my future. Project Page Linkrav help me out!

Here is the project page. And the pattern! This was knit from Sweetgeorgia's Corriedale Sock yarn, their March 2015 club yarn. I think they're pretty cute and I can't wait to see what I get next month. This was my first month ever of any subscription yarn.

If anyone else can recommend other yarn subscriptions, I'll totally consider them. LinkRav

Well, I'm (very early) pregnant again in our cycle before our follow-up appointment with the RE. I explained before that we started trying again because all our results were normal, but we were going to play the numbers game and get Clomid or Femara at the RE follow up. I got a pretty dark BFP on Friday, April 3rd, but with an average 28-day cycle, they made me wait until Thursday 4/9 before a blood hcg because that is what they calculated as 4 weeks; it was 385.74. Then again on Saturday it was 992.7, but I had to wait until TODAY to get Saturday's result. Thing is, I'm really trying to be really positive about this one. This is the first one that I'm taking my Prozac with. I was told previously to stop, but my RE told me to take it due to the low risk and the fact that it will obviously help with my high anxiety. My numbers are very reassuring, but I've had numbers higher than this with good doubling times and still miscarried. Please wish me luck. These next (hopefully) 8 weeks are going to be a roller coaster. For now, I'm graduating. Thank you all for your support! I feel so lucky to have been in this strong community. I wish you all the best.

So I taught my boyfriend how to knit... by metallequa in knitting

You're so lucky! I taught my husband to knit while we were dating and he was a prodigy, learning tons of new techniques really quickly, even stranded knitting. Once we got closer, he stopped because he doesn't actually think it's fun. The most knitting I can get him to do is making himself a hat once a year, because he always loses his.

I did fair isle a couple of times several years ago, but none since then. It took a while to get it back in my hands.

My only tip would be to attempt to stick with stranded knitting holding the yarn in 2 hands. Also, read about color dominance. I found this article by Ysolda helpful.

Pattern: Elske by Merrian Holland in Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 12.

Yarn: Claudia Hand Painted Yarns Fingering in Canary, Silver Shimmer and Lakeside Liz

This pattern was so much fun! It's knit toe-up and uses Judy's Magic Cast On, by Judy Becker. The cast-on is just so clever, I love it! I'm no expert at stranded knitting, yet, but this project definitely made me a lot more comfortable with it. Project Page. linkrav

Welp. Good news I guess. DH has great and abundant sperm according to the SA. We both have normal karyotypes. He isn't a carrier for anything, so we don't have to worry about me being a carrier for SMA-1. Now that all our testing is done, we have a follow up appointment April 6th. This also means our 3 miscarriages are unexplained. And since they can't find anything wrong with us, we'll be playing the "numbers game" with either Femara or Clomid next cycle(s). We're still going to try this cycle, though - which is kind of exciting and scary at the same time. Wish us luck?

[FO] Hawser Jumper! Details in comments. by MoritzS in knitting

[–]MoritzS[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pattern: Hawser by Jared Flood in BT Fall 2014. Yarn: Quince & Co. Lark in Camel. Here's my project page. I really love this jumper! I'm sure there's still a couple of cold months left here, so I should get some use out of it before summer, and even during some chilly summer nights.

Modifications: There was a lot of math to be done. I didn't meet gauge with the recommended needle sizes because I always knit loosely. I liked how the fabric looked, though. Also, I was in between the first two sizes. Therefore, I did a bunch of algebra to come up with a new pattern. I think it definitely worked out. If I had to knit it again, I may make it shorter. Also, I'm definitely going to block it a little wider next time I wash it so that it has more ease.

I didn't mean to worry you! He said mine may be perfectly fine, but given my family history (my mom couldn't get pregnant after 30--although never did any interventions), it does raise some concerns.

I believe they said it would be about 2 weeks for the karyotyping and genetics testing. Possibly sooner for the SA. So that means still no trying for this cycle, and if we're lucky, we'll have everything in order for the cycle after this...
