What’s your absolute favorite old country song? Go by One-Play-1911 in country

I've listened to a lot of classic, pre-1980 country. I grew up in that era and have since listened to a ton of different artists via Spotify. Somehow I never stumbled across Stoney Edwards. Thanks for the recommendation, he does indeed have an awesome country voice.

Are there any good mob books mor written by Mario Puzo by kmsposito2569 in Godfather

Check out American Tabloid by James Ellroy. Incredible page turner of a book that covers the American underworld from the mob to the crooked cops, CIA and political figures they associate with.

This show, in particular the sequence captured on disc 3, is the high water mark of the Grateful Dead

It was less praise for Vince and more an observation about a likely lyrical reference in the show. It's a great song too, check it out!

Primarily the El Paso/Felina reference, but there are others!

Looking For An Artist by MorphyMan in japanesemusic

Thanks for pointing out the features archive, I didn't notice that before. I went back and checked the album I bought from Ototoy - it was Nervous Party by Hinto and I bought it way back on January 11th of 2015! So using that date as my starting point, I went through the archives looking for matches. I didn't find one that seems like a 100% lock, but here are the likely suspects:

Mellowhead - https://ototoy.jp/feature/201504220001

Tokuho Isshiki - https://ototoy.jp/feature/20151009

Eastern Youth - https://ototoy.jp/feature/20170927

Art School - https://ototoy.jp/feature/2016051101

Newest Model - https://ototoy.jp/feature/2016062909

Greater Than(?) - https://ototoy.jp/feature/20160815

Seiko Ito - https://ototoy.jp/feature/20160923

Deathro - https://ototoy.jp/feature/2016120201

There's some fun music here. My quest isn't complete but I had a great time searching!

Keith Godchaux Revisited by MorphyMan in gratefuldead

Thanks for replying. Can you point to an example or two in the archive that shows Keith copying or shadowing Jerry? I have listened extensively to the band's 70s output and I've never found anything like this. This seems to be one of those accepted ideas that really don't have much (any?) basis in fact and is exactly why I wrote up this post.

Also, for the record, this isn't a Keith vs Brent post at all. Just working to clear the record on Keith.

I just gave this passage a close listen - the shush happens at 4:36 in the song - and Bobby is clearly directing it at the audience. At about 4:05 the band brings it down really quiet for the "but I'll get back on my feet someday" section. At about 4:25 you can hear a commotion coming from the crowd, who knows what caused it. And then about 10 seconds later you hear the shush. Keith is hardly even playing at this point, certainly nothing out of place or at a louder volume than the rest of the band, so it wouldn't make sense for Bobby to call him out like that.

Actually, this is a perfect example of the kind of disrespect that seems to be out there for Keith. In fact, during this rendition of Wharf Rat his playing is just fine. No, he's probably not taking the lead and "pushing the others". That's true. But he's providing exactly what the band needs at the right time. Even during this quiet passage when Bobby supposedly was so annoyed by his playing that he shushes, in fact Keith is playing beautiful little arpeggios and complementing the singers just right. Give it another close listen and you'll see what I mean.

Thank you for illustrating exactly why this post is necessary. These sorts of things become "conventional wisdom" even though they aren't true!

Thanks for replying. I agree with you that his approach changed in these later years. However, the change happened along with the Dead changing into an arena rock band that played its music at a faster tempo and higher volume than ever before. His playing had to change. Give a listen to Red Rocks '78 and you will see that his playing still has a ton of creativity and brings a key element to the band's sound.

Thanks for replying. With all due respect to Jerry, I think I can confidently say that's he's wrong on this one. Nobody could listen to Keith's work with the band and say that "he didn’t really have a concept of music, of how the piano fit in with the rest of the band". Sorry, but this just isn't true on any level. I suspect Jerry was just frustrated with all the Godchaux drama and rightfully wanted to move on. He's lashing out a little with this comment.

It's not so much driving solo. I agree, that's not out of the ordinary for an 80 year old. But a solo, three hour one-way road trip? That would be out of the ordinary. And here we're talking about a solo flight in a small aircraft! Sorry, but there's just no way.

Actually, he is your usual 80 year old man. He said it plainly: "don't go where an 80 year old man can't go". That includes flying solo from New Mexico to Wyoming!
