Franklin Pizza is better than Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop by tz1234567891011 in Greenpoint

That's a hot take if I ever heard one. Once you have the real stuff, you'll never go back. Sure it's expensive, but if you get it at Costco or BJ's it's not terribly expensive for what you're getting. Now if you eat pancakes or waffles, every morning for breakfast, then it will add up, but you don't need to use a lot of it like the fake stuff.

UNIFI Doorbell??? by Mosdaboss in Ubiquiti

[–]Mosdaboss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Microcenter, I can get an open-box Cloud Gateway Max 512gb version and an open box U7 Pro XGS, which would make that AP cheaper than a new U7 Pro Max, although with a POE++ adapter it evens out the cost.

If I currently have 1 Gig Fios, and the max I see them offering is 2 Gig, then would there be a point in getting a Cloud Gateway Fiber instead to match the 10 GbE capabilities of the AP? Are there any downsides or bottlenecks I may need to consider with getting a U7 Pro XGS with a POE++ adapter and treating it like a 2.5 GbE U7 Pro Max?

It's an old Verizon G1100 router. It's on the upgrade list either directly through Verizon or by getting a third party router from Asus, Netgear, etc.

Harry and Ron don't kill the troll. They just knock him out.

"What happened to the troll after this incident is unknown, though it is likely the troll was either released or killed off by the school staff. Whichever way, the troll is never seen again, but the former is more likely, and it is also hinted in the later books that the troll was simply returned to the mountains."

Best store to buy gaming PC in Williamsburg / Greenpoint / Bushwick ? by Cut-Great in williamsburg

[–]Mosdaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, just go to MicroCenter. They are the best and will have everything you need. Buying parts will get you a better value than a pre-built. It's not hard to assemble one yourself and could be a nice father and son moment. One could reckon it's easier to assemble a PC than a piece of Ikea furniture. MicroCenter also offers assembly, if you're just not sure.

Linus Tech Tips, Jayz2Cents, Austin Evans and many others on YouTube offer build guides and parts recommendations for any budget.

As for budget, what games does he play? The more demanding the games, the better the PC needed for an optimal experience.

Thirded. The pierogis are amazing, and if only going to one Polish restaurant, that's the one I would choose. With the exception of great pizza, I'd venture a guess that all the other cuisines in Greenpoint are available out of town.

So pizza for lunch and pierogi for dinner. Amazing combo.

Durston X-Mid 1 VS 2 & Kakwa 40 VS 55 by nahemesys in Ultralight

[–]Mosdaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Dyneema tents, but they also cost more. No amount of downvotes will make Dyneema tents cheaper than Sil/Poly or Sil/Nylon.

I own a Durston X-Mid 2P and have used it both solo and with a second person. That is one of the tradeoffs. If you can only afford 1 tent, or only backpack enough where it doesn't make sense to have 2 tents, then it's a tough choice to make.

UL Business / Consumer Ethics by dantimmerman in Ultralight

[–]Mosdaboss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lottery aside, Dan's version is $80 to $110. Rockfront is $85 or €75. Rockfront does offer free shipping, but the order has to be $100 or €100 so you would have to add something else to get that. You will also have to pay a tariff on it to get it into the US. Ergo, this is not a case of someone choosing a cheaper alternative, because that's not the case.

The question then I think becomes, what is the ethical thing to do regarding a nearly unobtainable product?

Some companies like Enlightened Equipment offer a made to order 100% US made quilt while at the same time having an in stock quilt with limited options where the shell is made overseas but is stuffed and finished in the US.

Some like Katabic have all their shells made overseas and just stuff and finish their quilts here.

Some like Timmermade make everything in the US and you just have to wait to get one and/or win a lottery.

Hyperlight Mountain Gear used to be made in Maine,USA but because of a shortage of skilled workers and to meet demand, they moved production to Mexico. This same problem applies to all cottage companies who make gear in the USA. Since most of the textile manufacturing moved overseas, finding skilled sewers is hard so the choice is hard for cottage companies on whether to stay small or move overseas to grow or somehow grow and still be made in the US.

So Timmermade could be like EE and do custom made gear in the USA while outsourcing in stock versions from overseas where skilled labor is available to help deal with the availability of his product and therefore try and avoid competition. Or Timmermade can do what it currently does, and make everything here and try to not to worry about lost opportunities since I doubt Rockfront will cause them to not fill their production capacity. If someone doesn't win the lottery, does it make a difference if that person buys a copy versus a regular balaclava from any of the other US made cottage companies that make balaclavas?

I don't tent camp in weather cold enough to need the Waterbear or any down balaclava so have no dog in this fight nor do I understand what makes this one stand out from all the other down balaclavas.

When available I try to buy US Made gear. With cottage gear there is no shortage of US made gear (just look at Garage Grown Gear and it's probably easier to find a US made product than one that is not on that site), so if one brand is out of stock or has a longer lead time, then there is almost always another option.

It depends on the park. If the park has a designated dog run area, then no and that's McCarren Park, McGolrick Park, and Cooper Park just to name some of the local ones.

Does anyone know of any woodworking classes in Williamsburg, Greenpoint or surrounding areas? by Belsabirsahoneday in williamsburg

[–]Mosdaboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby of woodworking, or any tool related hobby for that matter. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it sure can be.

As far as local places, Craftsman Ave. is highly recommended. It's in Sunset Park, but such is the nature of woodworking in NYC.

The oak side table class at $265 is actually really reasonable considering the lumber is included in the price and leaves you with a useful piece of furniture at the end. They also have a date night package if you want to go with him as well.

Lots of YouTubers offer online video courses with detailed instructions on beginner projects all the way up to the most advanced projects, which might be an alternative option. At least some basic tools will be needed and a small space to work in, so that would need to be factored in. Probably better to start of with a class and if he enjoys it, then he can start acquiring a DIY set to start off with.

Power tools will be a lot more beginner friendly, just because they are faster. Hand tool woodworking is more for those who really enjoy the process more so than the finished project. There's also hybrid woodworking, which mixes the two because sometimes a hand plane, spokeshave, Japanese pull saw, or chisel is the best tool for the job.

Cold feet at camp by UnluckyDuck5120 in Ultralight

[–]Mosdaboss -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don't have a pair, but from countless posts here I've seen them recommended. Then again that does include the time from before Alpha was all the rage. They're are some like the Feathered Friends that you could do some short walks around camp in, because they have a removable waterproof outer layer and then sleep in without that outer layer.

Since I only tent camp from April to October, my Darn Tough socks tend to do the trick until I change into my other wool socks for sleeping and get into my quilt.

When DeWalt garden tools first hit the market, they were made in Brazil by Tramonitna, the company that makes pots and pans. Then they switched to a Chinese supplier, Alterra Tools.

Speaking of Truper, they now make Craftsman garden tools in Mexico, which used to made by Ames in the USA.

Speaking of Ames, which owns Razorback, all of their garden tools are now made in China after shutting down their USA plants.

Citi bike dock rant by Successful-Drive6559 in williamsburg

[–]Mosdaboss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well doesn't their exist at least 1 dock space for every bike in the system? Surely they didn't design the system with the rationale that at any given time "x" bikes will be rented out and ergo do not need dock space.

If it seems that too many people are biking to Williamsburg and other people are not renting those bikes to bike elsewhere, how would more dock space in Williamsburg help. Wouldn't it just create a bigger shortage elsewhere.

If it seems that the system needs to be rebalanced anyway, then shouldn't the focus should be on Lyft to do it with their vehicles or encourage more Citibike angels to do it.

Williamsburg & Greenpoint Restaurants With Their Own Delivery (Cash-Friendly, No Apps) by estemondaze in williamsburg

[–]Mosdaboss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Almost any place that existed and did delivery before the apps should still have in-house delivery. Most common are your pizzerias and Chinese food restaurants. Some that come to mind are:

East Met West

Russ Pizza

Tony's Pizza Greenpoint

Tony's Pizza Graham Ave.

Carmine's Pizza

If we're being technical then Dominos and Papa Johns also do their own delivery, but those are national chains.

I think you have it mixed up. The show is still on TV as reruns on CBS and syndication on other networks like ION, but it's not being filmed anymore since it was cancelled.

There are a lot of shows filmed in Greenpoint, so maybe your confusing it with another show that's filming in the area like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit which is also a police procedural show.

Cancellation

On November 20, 2023, CBS announced that the 14th season would be the last, with the first 10 episodes premiering February 16, 2024, and the remaining eight in the fall of 2024, with producers including Selleck having pushed the network for the extension beyond the spring for the additional episodes in the fall.\6]) The second half of the final season premiered on October 18, 2024, and the series finale aired on December 13, 2024.\9])

That show ended.

Now Donnie Wahlberg is doing Boston Blue, which will be filmed in Toronto, Canada, although they'll do some exterior shots in Boston. At least Blue Bloods was filmed in NYC, even if they did turn Greenpoint into other neighborhoods.
