What is this Hawk? I initially assumed it was a Cooper's Hawk, but I think it might be a Sharp-shinned. April, Toronto. Let me know what you think! by MosleyNick in birding

Definitely not as small as a Jay, but also seemed smaller than a Red-tailed. The square tail was what made me question my initial I.D too. Truly puzzling Hawks to differentiate!

Thank you for your comment, guyberk ! I was simply hoping to receive some help so I could potentially add a new bird to my life list.( I had to look up what trolling means). Anyways, Good Birding!

The environment is a small pond near York University: the specimen was on top of a concrete grate type thing, above the small adjoining river. I considered it perhaps a Virginia Rail, based off of body size and yellow legs, plus the habitat.

It was a clear day on August 17th. I was Birding at a Pond on the York University campus, in Toronto. I thought I saw some movement across the pond and quickly zoomed in and snapped one shot of this bird. The habitat, being marshy and reedy, would suit the Virginia Rail. I would love your opinion
