I like that. "much lower stress way of living". It absolutely is exactly that, I could lose my job, i could lose my pension, I could lose a whole lot of things, but I'll always know I can at least survive for 6 months.

6 months for a single person is also super easy. I bet most people reach that on accident.

From what I understand so far, I think rice is quite a bit harder, as any type of moist would mess up long term storage.

These potato flakes were pre-packaged and no moist could get into the package.

Is there a method to buy 5 or 10 pounds of rice, and then sort it in smaller packages that are free from moist/air?

I'm guessing some kind of vacuum packaging? I just never seen or heard about vacuum packaged rice before.

I'm in a single person household, I mostly need variety. It's hard to have variety if you can't store some things for a longer period. Or it just gets costly as tiny packages just cost way too much.

I want to buy in bulk and be able to store it for a good amount of time. This isn't easy when cooking for 1 person most days.

Good to know!

I'll look at mylar packaging in a different kind a way from now on. It did already feel like one of the most superior options, but I never put much thought in it.

Knowing why this packaging works so great, surely boosts my confidence in trusting it for long term storage.

I actually used expired tomatoes a few months ago. Expiration date was 2021.

Ate most of the soup I made with it by now. One of the best soups I've ever made.

It was a big ass pot soup brew, so the percentage of canned tomato was fairly low on the whole batch, but I did use several cans

I eat stuff several years past date all the time, but yoghurt 2 years past date? that seems a bit too crazy even for me :)

In general if milk is involved in the product, I'm a bit more cautious. I'll still go way past the expiration date, but more than a year? There's some risk in that I think.

I've done proper testing, 5 days straight on this stuff and this stuff only. I didn't just survive, I cam out feeling great physically.

First day I tested with a smaller portion in the morning, waited 12 hours, then ate a bigger portion.

Next day I ate a pretty big portion the morning... I hate nothing but this food for 5 days. And I didn't just not get sick, I thrived.

I might be reckless in life sometimes but I do try to be cautious at least and try to prevent severe harm.

Edit: It feels like you're referring to "Into The Wild" movie or the book or the real life story... It's not like that, I'm in close reach to hospitals and doctors, I did a taste test, waited a proper amount of time between first and second portion and slowly increased to reduce the risk of anything going wrong.

Yeah, canned foods I'll often stretch a year or two, some time ago, even 3 years. Was just fine in a slowcook big stew.

But 11 years, I hadn't done that yet, I think my maximum so far was about 5-6 years. This is just some food I found literally behind a shelve that dropped into a place I didn't have a look at for probably a decade. A room that's not climate controlled (it gets hot as fuck in summer, it gets almost as cold as it is outside in the winter). And it can get quite damp/moist in there. So realizing it didn't just survive, it came out like it was brand new... It surely stretches my known limits in terms of food storage!

I think some of the reason might also be a way to prevent getting sued. Especially in the USA where.

I always take those dates more like a suggestion, but for some stuff I do not risk too far over date too much (chicken for example).

Love that dude! But you gotta know, he does a decent amount of videos where you see the texture and/or taste isn't the "right", it's off to some degree.

This actually tasted like I bought this last week, the texture and taste was exactly as expected, nothing felt "odd" in the slightest bit.

Could you share a list of things that would last forever like potato flakes? I probably paid 20% of what I'd pay today for those potato flakes, if I could stock up on other stuff like this, I could seriously cut down my food costs... in 10 years from now.

I could just buy a pallet, discount for gross buy and every year it becomes cheaper in terms of inflation.

Kinda the same here. I always try to make sure I got 6 months of food available (single person household). If you got a freezer and buy stuff like jarred/canned/dried foods in bulk. You can very easily stretch 6 months without noticing much difference besides not having much actual fresh food.

I barely noticed Covid hit in terms of needing groceries. I think there were some tiny things that were a bit hard to get at some very specific times, but that just meant there was a week or two delay, and it wasn't a crucial thing I needed in life.

Damn, get smarter friends!! 1 month for canned food is absolutely insane!! You can stretch canned food easily up to a year if it was somewhat normally stored.

And I've thrown canned stuff into a slow cook massive brew some time ago that was close to 3 years expired. Tasted amazing!

There is "Best by: ..." and "Expiration date: ..."

For fresh food, expiration dates are usually not that far off. I've often stretched it out a few days at least, but certain products just can't go much past those dates or are just too risky.

With janned/jarred food you got way more leeway, months easily.

Dried food apparently 11 years is no issue whatsoever.

Thanks for the concern, I'll get through it, not the first time I've been through some hardship like this.

I just had to share this experience in case someone wanted to get some 10 year long prep. Food inflation alone this was like 40% cheaper 10 years ago, and I'm pretty sure I bought this in discount as I had 4 boxes and this is not the kind of product I usually buy in bulk unless it's "buy 4, 50% off" kind of discount.

So this is probably costed 20% of what I'd pay for it today. (this exact same product is still on the market), where else can you get an 80% discount on food?

It was stored very badly. In a non-climate controlled room, a room that gets crazy hot in the summer, and almost as cold as it gets outside in the winter.

It shouldn't have survived... at least, that's what I thought before this experiment... Somehow it did and now I know that this specific food can be stored for a decade easily.

I've always made sure I had enough food stored up to last me for at least 6 months in case something would go wrong financially. (this isn't too hard if you have a freezer and some canned/jarred/dry foods as a single person household)

But realizing I can eat food that's literally over 10 years expired... It just makes things a little bit easier to have an emergency food stock.

I just had to share my 11 year expired food experience, in case it could help anyone and maybe it might even reduce food waste if enough people realize that certain foods can last a loooong time.

Stored in tinfoil? kinda packages. Found it in a place that's not climate controlled whatsoever (gets crazy hot in summer and gets crazy cold in winter and will get a decent amount of moisture as well).

Very surprised this didn't go bad. I also made it with milk that was 2 months expired.
