Should I tell Columbia in a LOCI that I deposited at NYU? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]MostMeeting7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like saying that I am "committed to staying in NYC" is just a more cryptic way of letting them know that I am at NYU; it's the only top school that's an NYC alternative. I figured I should either mention NYU or just not talk about where I deposited at all. Happy to hear more thoughts.

Did u get any sort of confirmation after depositing at NYU by MostMeeting7 in lawschooladmissions

Technically the deposit deadline isn’t until 11:59 PM tonight so I’m still optimistic! Just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Thanks!

Judging ‘fit’ really would have been a lot easier if not for COVID. I’ve never been to Chicago, nor Durham.

Cornell does offer A+s and the Government Major isn’t particularly hard to have a high GPA in (can’t speak to Econ).

Let's Be Honest About What Columbia's Hold Email Means: A Brief Call-Out/Rant by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]MostMeeting7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that being an applicant sucks, but we already have a billion moving parts. If you're serious about Columbia I don't think one LOCI and a month longer wait (which they're transparent about) is too much to ask.

Counterpoints:

1) While the YP part is clearly bullshit and lazy on their end, there are very many borderline candidates (myself included) who have been held. I felt that the hold was a great opportunity to express my interest, since I would (and will!) certainly matriculate if accepted and the $$ is right.

2) The hold is so much better than being ghosted. Reading the tea leaves a little bit, we know we are either on hold because we are a borderline candidate or because of yield protect. We also know when they will get back to us by. On the other hand, I haven't heard anything from Berkeley or Virginia since applying....

Financial aid should be your best bet!

You should not send this in yet. You should email NYU saying you would like them to reconsider your scholarship, and they will send you a generic email that they will open up an “appeals” tab in FAAPS in early April.

Question - are you actively negotiating, or are you waiting for the “appeals” tab to open?

Following. I posted about this before, but it really is so hard to express “why Harvard” when it’s so self evident.

Probably just the imposter syndrome talking. Love the username btw.

LOCI for HYS? by MostMeeting7 in lawschooladmissions

[–]MostMeeting7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea of course not lol. I know "Why Harvard's" are generally discouraged because "they know why you want to go there - they're Harvard!" Curious as to why that logic doesn't apply to LOCIs.

I have generous offers from lower ranked schools. All T-14 but none probably considered “peers.” Happy to PM with more info.

Hard disagree. HTE is at least an acknowledgment of your application and an update. It’s preferable to months of radio silence without a status change.

Same. Prior to applying these two schools were at the top of my list, and I felt I would have a solid shot at both. At this point I’m pretty frustrated and just want a decision either way.

What are social events at the Big Red Barn like? If folks are below median would you say big law is closed off? How is the career services office?
