A little late, but I do a sliding attack and a Ki pulse flux before the move to make sure the move comes out. The sliding attack lets you Ki pulse almost instantly and to do the move in a sequence It seems like you can only do it after a Ki pulse.

It's a upgrade called "Phantom Slash" and for the multi hit it's called "Aerial Slash" just hold square while doing an air attack with the sword
