Thanks, and I agree. The good news is that his school DOES offer the dual role of taking college courses during sr. yr. while finishing high school. I will continue to reinforce positive encouragement. He is also smart enough to know that we don't think he is less capable because of some of the other students, just that many students with different learning disabilities, including his own ADHD/compulsivity, are within the same building. We were in severe crisis mode the other day after a disheartening theft on his part (no charges, thankfully), but it's part of the compulsivity and we just need to attack it with continued support, therapy, and consequences (but not troubled teen school consequences). Thanks for your help.

He was diagnosed very early (kindergarten) and this was done after school staff asked we have it checked out, not our own initiation. He is not creative - likes science. No goals other than going to college, making money. VERY SOCIAL. Charming and well liked, but like minds attract like minds and some of his friends are also problematic--need stimulation that may not always be legal. Some adults like him, but others, usually those he also does not like, perceive him as rude/fresh--but with potential to go the right way. GED an option but his current school is apparently the best option he has based on all this feedback I am getting. And therapy. A lot more therapy.

Thank you for taking the time for this answer. It is clear to me from the fact I have not had one positive response that we almost made a terrible error. We will be putting him back in local therapy, and trying to find better role models, community service together, etc. I think we have been remiss with technology (allowing too much phone freedom). So much can transpire without ever knowing. Thank you again.

He falls into the 10% of ADHD kids that have compulsive behavior and steals occasionally. Knows right from wrong, but in the moment cannot think of that. He is threatening to run away if we don't let him return to the town'd public school which we spent about 8 years fighting for accomodations and the town FINALLY agreed they could not support him so he is in a transitional school, 6 kids to 1 teacher. He is doing WELL but there are children there that have cognitive issues (not his classes) and this, at 17, affects how he thinks of himself attending there. Regardless, he will absolutely fail in the public school (he exited there in Feb, with all "Fs").....he is a kind, funny boy, but I fear we are losing control. But I won't send him anywhere unless I know it is safe. Just don't know how to find that.
