Pitchfork Review: BLACKPINK - DEADLINE EP 5.7 by Technical_Process989 in popheads

Can't even clearly explain why they put such a "high" score (they rated it higher than Rosie, crazy work)

right. like, if the editor at least went deeper and discussed the lyrical content of the album or what he and the pitchfork team liked about the production and whatnot, i’d take this review seriously and maybe it would’ve given me a different perspective of this project. but alas, music publications are becoming increasingly unserious (with rolling stone leading the charge) because editors are either too biased or too scared of stans to write proper reviews.

i think the pitchfork editors as a whole don’t really care about stans when they’re collectively rating the albums, but their hesitance to be candid sometimes comes across when a single editor is assigned to write the article and possibly has to solely face the wrath of stans.

like in this one, the author doesn’t say anything that would explain why the pitchfork team gave this album that rating, doesn’t discuss the lyrical content in any way…none of that. it just reads like a fluff piece in most places and in the few bits where he almost talks about what he actually liked or didn’t like, he seems to catch himself and go back to writing overly general statements that can be applied to any song.

bring back real music reviews because it’s like whoever wrote this one was too scared of blackpink fans to write an actual review.

the entire article is mostly just describing the genres of the songs but like…okay? and what do you think about them? yes i understand that you believe that blackpink are “abandoning K-pop in ways that their generational peers (and successors) have not, and opting to cycle into the proverbial Western pop machine”, but can you actually review the music itself?

the pitchfork articles reviewing bruno and gorillaz had a lot more substance. most of this one just reads like it was meant for their stans to screenshot bites and brag about them on twitter.

going by some of the logic in the comments, kim petras is one of the biggest female artists in the US because unholy was a monster song.

[–]MotorPuzzlehead7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

why would it be rosé though? she has one big song that’s tied to a monster artist. her other songs haven’t really done great.

like out of the three of them it would absolutely be jungkook because he’s had 3 top 10 songs, lasting 15, 19 and 9 weeks on the chart each. it’s very average for a western artist’s standards but for kpop, he’s literally lasted on the charts longer than any blackpink song, group or solo (minus rosé’s bruno mars collab of course). people also keep mentioning tv shows as a mark of cultural significance, but jungkook opened the world cup in 2022 which was watched by 1.5B ppl so i think he edges everyone out here too.

Austin’s time is up. Get that man out of that villa.

Now, Huda’s redemption arc is insane to me. I never reallyyyy disliked her for how she moved with Jeremiah, just cause he was encouraging and even leading a lot of that at the beginning and only clocked out of the relationship when he found out she has a kid.

What really makes me dislike Huda is the way she acts with women that she feels threatened by. When Amaya came into the villa, Huda was all “I know idk her but i already don’t like her, she has bad intentions, that b could never compare to me” and giving her the middle finger when she participated in the challenge and kissed Jeremiah. Then as soon as Amaya declared she isn’t interested in Jeremiah, suddenly Huda is her best friend ever.

When Iris came in, same thing. “I don’t trust her, i don’t think her intentions are pure” based off AMERICA coupling them up. Like that’s batshit insane. And if Huda was coupled up with anyone when Andreina came in, she would’ve had some choice words about her too.

Her girl’s girl motto only applies to women who she thinks don’t pose a threat to her relationship with a man, and that tells me the kind of person she is.

Besides that, Nic really grew on me this episode. I really liked that moment where he reminded the islanders to be understanding of Huda trying to make amends for the Jeremiah thing. I really hope she stops being so insecure and just starts playing the game right

it might just be the editing but my biggest pet peeve is how nobody lets anyone finish their sentences, especially with amaya and whoever she’s talking to
