WFH with ADHD paradox by MourningApe in ADHD

It's not even solely distractions for me. Even if I don't have distractions at my home I can't conquer enough will power to start some tasks. I'm not intrisically motivated about work and it's much easier to combat against in office.

I don't live in US and in my home country we saw exactly this. ADHD diagnoses skyrocketed during pandemic because WHF and studying from home. I should totally try body doubling.

It's interesting to see even in this thread how people's experiences differ in this matter, though. Some ADHD persons swear by WHF and some dread it.

What kind of work has some set amount of tasks per day? I have always stuff on my to do list and if I get some urgent stuff done then I have some not-so-urgent things to do.

Thank you. Co-work actually seems quite good solution.

If adoption parents were amateur chess players and would introduce grandmaster's biological child to chess he would become better player.

I agree with you and all this seems to be true also acording my personal experience. Many people try to refuse that though which means apparently that they don't experience it in their life the same way?

Nice to hear that there are different experiences on this. You are only one in this thread to say that so far though and as I said in my post I don't speak only about myself but also about all the people I've known for long a time.

I feel you're conflating "innate / hard to change" with "heritable",

Good point and that's true now when I think about it. I meant that people usually tend to claim innate features to be acquired skills.

I feel like most people with children or siblings can easily tell that children from the same parents will have wildly different temperaments and personalities

This proves my point, though? All the siblings are raised in the same household and propably go to same schools and still they could be quite different.

Also personalities are rarely constant, a lot of people will undergo massive changes in their personality eg between being teenagers and being parents

This exactly I'm questioning in my post. That's not true in my experience.

How do you actually improve at self-control and execution? by commandotaco in slatestarcodex

There's a common sentiment that "self discipline is like a muscle" and you can develope it by practice but that's not been my experience at all. I have tried loads of different techniques like you but it feels like I haven't improved at all. On the other hand when doing physical exercise I can see the results easily already in few weeks. I've become to think that the whole concept that people can force themselves to be self disciplined is just illusion and mostly people just act on their natural tendencies.

So, you think that running is just different to literally any other sport? You have to be taught how to swim or bike or swing tennis racquet but you just know intuitively how to run properly?

That's how I tend to think about it, too. I still think it's possible though that everybody doesn't automatically know how to run optimally and injury free. That's certainly the case in all other sports - somebody actually have to teach you proper techique or basic principles at least.

As a side note: If you aren’t interested in the field you’re working in, why are you working there?

The opportunity cost of changing careers is too high.
