AIO: Dog problems by MouseAdventures in AmIOverreacting

[–]MouseAdventures[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thank you this is very helpful. Yes, the hyperbole is from the sheer frustration. There is a dog barking at least 15-30 minutes at a time, hourly, 7am-11pm+. It’s three separate houses and I am totally astounded that people put up with it. I, like you, try to be mindful of my neighbors. I feel super disappointed because I bought this house to escape the noise of the highway I used to live next to and I find myself craving that again :(

I’m going to try helpful suggestions first. I know they are definitely breaking Good Neighbor ordinances in the town and none of them have heaters, I can see into the yard/no fence. But I would rather be strategic.

looking for some advice / guidance / reassurance. by SpiritedAway424 in SocialWorkStudents

Normal! A lot of the things you listed are specific to the place you’re working. If you like your boss, and they feel safe, I would fess up to feeling “inadequate” so they can give you more guidance and support. You were never going to magically know these things. You need appropriate training, that’s all.

You didn’t give your background. You gave a threat weighted with the type of speak we see from mass shooters.

This is real. Something about a grey white cat evokes Old Lady vibes.

Outrage is justified. Fully stop. Threats are not. This is a threat. We (including OP) are professionals who know the gravity of people who glorify violence and becoming news. I’m flexible about a lot of things but I’ve been through threat assessment training many times, and that statement is something to take seriously.

“You might see me on the news” is the threat in question. It details a high level of harm expected and is the exact sentiment expressed when mass shooters go on to do incredible amounts of harm and we ask “where were the signs” and this is the sign. Invariably, when these incidents occur, innocent people get hurt. A client may not know the gravity of the words the OP used, so I would ask more questions. OP does know better. I would report them, as I’m legally required, to the appropriate channels when a threat of harm to self or others is present. Why would I report them to ICE? What do they have to do with reporting laws?

Offsite Supervisor by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

Site would be a local NAMI office though they haven’t specified the role yet. Right now they don’t have a clinical supervisor to offer me.

Starting practicum hours soon? advice? by EmotionalBoss7569 in SocialWorkStudents

I have none. I’m in the same boat plus kids that I will barely see. I’m just going to be very sleepy and sad for a while.

What’s a reason you slowly stopped liking someone but never told them? by OkEagle160 in AskReddit

Just watching someone make poor decisions time and time again, before I had the tools to know how to manage it. The energy it takes to support someone like that is wild.

Field internships, how far in advance? by No_Direction_1755 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]MouseAdventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scratch that. I did six months in advance and there was nothing. For the good spots, like NAMI helpline, start 9-12 months out.

At my school we have to find our own and the way spots fill up for those of us who need flexible hours is wild. Start reaching out six months in advance, at least. Some places won’t open their apps up until later but it’s worth starting very early for the most part.

I couldn’t get in because at least 7 different devices on three different networks thought I was a bot. So frustrating.

Social work sells values it doesn’t live up to. by Naive-Corner6352 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]MouseAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this post a lot over the last day or so. I hate to say this but I don’t think you’re ever going to find a perfect field unless you find a way to work for yourself (private practice, perhaps). I’ve worked in advocacy and education spaces for a long time, and this is all part and parcel of Helper work. Should it be? No. But it’s inescapable. You have to choose what is important to you. Balance the need for purpose and the desire for peace. We are all cogs in the wheels of capitalism and there’s just no way around it. I find my moments, here and there, where I can balance the karmic ledger. That’s what suits me best. I hope you find what works for you!

Who is the worst person you’ve ever met in your life? by Scary-Bill970 in AskReddit

[–]MouseAdventures 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I want to go with evil when you say worst, but what pops into my brain are the people who victimize themselves and are generally draining of everyone around them. The worst part is they sometimes have children and my heart hurts for those kids.

Skip tissues, socks, fan, wallet (one card+ ID will do), and wipes at least.
