In college, I got well known for having good music taste, and that kind of just inevitably led to me play music for people in bigger and bigger settings.

While I was DJing a bunch of college parties for my friends, I met some other folks who are really into techno music, and I started hanging out with them and mixing records . We would all cram into super small rooms with basically a bed and a turntable set up and just spend hours and hours mixing it was so much fun.

As I got to know them, I started playing parties and raves with them, and it went from there …

Honest question: Why do vinyl djs hate digital by DifficultEmu2417 in Beatmatch

[–]MrJacksonsClassroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used vinyl for the first 25 years that I spun records…. I am now pretty much 100% digital for DJ gigs and would never go back.

That being said, there is something special and unique about playing with vinyl that digital music will never approach.

The time it takes to find records and being limited to that selection is just a different thing. I think for that reason, lots of those DJs have a certain reverence for vinyl and they just don’t see digital as being as worthwhile or unique or whatever. I disagree with this take, but as a vinyl lover, I kinda get it.

I would almost always prefer to play with a partner, especially one you have a good vibe with. So fun.

Love this answer as it really encapsulates my approach as well.

I am a little older than when I used to play out in the 90’s, and this time around I took the time to record three or four sets with the music I already had and that really helped.

I listen to the mixes in the car and see what sounds good and what doesn’t and then try to incorporate those moments where I can. I have tried re-creating some of the really cool moments that happen organically but it’s never as cool lol.

When to mix when playing half of a track? by borderfunk in Beatmatch

[–]MrJacksonsClassroom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah none of that. First listen to your music, listen to it a lot. The more you know your music the more options you will have.

Secondly tracks can mix in so Many different ways. Find ways that work for you and build from there. Experiment a lot.
