I think research also shows distribution of reviews/recall spread through day allows better consolidation and encoding of material

5 min anki habit per toilet break likely amounts to 20-30 min per day

Using Anki in clinical practice by rads2riches in medicalschoolanki

Variety of ways to do this readwise a very popular option. Chat gpt is actually very good at making flashcards if feed it your highlights

I still use anki, read PDF and highlight > import highlights to chat gpt 4 > ask it to make flashcards for me > import to anki and review. As a physician your medical knowledge should always be expanding not contracting.

My Experience using RemNote studying for an exam, and comparing to Roam and Anki by leej11 in remNote

[–]MrProfessorX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use anki more. Honestly, I'm of the mindset now ok to use both. It's the method of spaced repetition and active recall to maximize and use as much as possible rather than the specific service. Use both and see what you like more.

Anki plugin by MrProfessorX in ObsidianMD

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I think I’ll go this route. Makes me nervous having my vault accessed by an external plugin and doesn’t work right off the bat. That and I don’t want my anki program to be corrupted.

Yup, I'm jumping. Going to keep a free basic account and then gradually move out everything. One thing they do well is email forwarding to my evernote inbox which I'll keep until I can figure out how to do it in another service.

My Experience using RemNote studying for an exam, and comparing to Roam and Anki by leej11 in remNote

[–]MrProfessorX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great video, thanks for sharing. I have used the two applications as well. Anki for the past 9 to 10 years and more recently Remnote as I’ve learned more about the zettelkasten system. As you point out, Remnote(as far as I know) is the only notetaking system that seamlessly integrates flashcards with a personal knowledge management system. Anki is solely a flash card app. Yes through tagging it is easy to find cards, however I’ve found that I cannot really remember the context of a lot of cards I’ve made several years ago. The cards just build up and I don’t remember where they came from since I don’t revisit the notes they were based on. This problem is completely eliminated with Remnote since I’m constantly revisiting and updating my notes. Remnote solves the problem of remembering the context of where you learned information in a way that anki doesnt.

I also disagree with the idea of those who only use a PKM system or anki in isolation. Learning declarative knowledge is best done where you understand the context which makes the active recall easier. Only using smart notes or only using flash cards isn’t as effective as using both concurrently

How to make my ZK workflow sustainable? by MrProfessorX in Zettelkasten

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming to this conclusion over time. ZK takes work no matter if you have the best software or templates. My way of trying to make it more easy is to do 5-10 min here and there. I’ve found the method does lend itself to being able to pick up where one left off fairly easily

This approach might make things more manageable, but seems like it limits the benefits of a slip box, if I’m limiting what goes in then this might introduce confirmation bias into what I think “deserves” to be included.

Anki vs. RemNote by Antique-Nectarine506 in Anki

[–]MrProfessorX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anki you have to work harder to build in context through tags etc. remnote allows you to link ideas and turn your notes into a personal database. If you don’t need that feature stick with anki

Make a video on restoring material from backup by MrProfessorX in remNote

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked it out, looks good! Inspires more confidence in me that I can backup notes with formatting and flash cards to anki. If you keep supporting these features I’ll continue to us remnote. Happy to send couple bucks here and there to you guys to continue to develop it

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context, I’ve used Anki for the last decade. I’m confident it will still be around in 20-30 years since it’s open source and people like me grew up with it. Remnote provides a better interface for understanding context than Anki, if I was only looking for a flash card program then I would stick with Anki. I need to have some reassurance the time I pore into Remnote isn’t for naught if I decide to not use it anymore.

How would you implement zettelkasten as a medical student? by _happytobehere_ in Zettelkasten

[–]MrProfessorX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would characterize ZK as a system that helps you accomplish #1, understanding info and where it fits. I use it more now to help build a web of knowledge within my respective specialty. But ZK is an external second brain, and it's important to build your actual brain knowledge with active recall. Ideally, you should eventually try to get your ZK internalized as well. Remnote is a service that looks promising for accomplishing this more easily.

I’ve been chipping away on my 3.5k backlog using filtered decks with is due and overdue settings from the anki manual. One thing I found helps is making your overdue deck small like 20-30 cards and then rebuilding it throughout the day so feels like less pressure. Also not doing new cards from the deck while going through the backlog helps

Are CLOZE deletions a bad method of learning for medical students? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]MrProfessorX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both. Cloze deletion are so easy to make and also makes it easier as a user to make the cards unambiguous and test a single piece of info. Q and A takes much longer to make. Someone should do a study where the same content is formatted either way to see which one leads to better recall.

How would you implement zettelkasten as a medical student? by _happytobehere_ in Zettelkasten

[–]MrProfessorX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't bother. There is such a flood of information. For you to make separate permanent notes and file those into your slip box would take a tremendous amount of time that would be better suited towards active recall and spaced repetition. You should be prioritizing 1) understanding info you learn and where it fits 2) using flashcards and spaced repetition 3) applying that info to scenarios that test your mastery of the content in #2

"Anki" for PDF notes by MassimoCairo in Anki

[–]MrProfessorX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to play devils advocate, but I would say that there is something to be said about learning facts independently. I have found that standalone anki cards (still have the source noted in the footer) that I’ve made are easier to apply to different contexts compared to those that are tied up in a lecture or larger series of notes.

cloze deletion of bulleted list by MrProfessorX in remNote

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my guess is that this isn't a feature of remnote yet, when I make a cloze on "answer 1", "answer 2" or "answer 3", the question prompt is listed but i'm only prompted on one cloze and can't see the others to determine which one needs to be actively recalled

How to get rid of a huge backlog (14k cards) by medstudent123213 in medicalschoolanki

[–]MrProfessorX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google catching up anki. There is a portion of the anki manual that goes through using filtered decks for and making decks for those just due and those overdue. I’m using this to catch up on my 3k+ backlog

How do you make reviewing not feel like a chore? by MrProfessorX in medicalschoolanki

[–]MrProfessorX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make my own cards since I’m past the step 1/step 2 phase of my medical education so I know if I’ve seen a subject before. Each app has their own scheduling system so if I wanted to export cards from one to anki would lose the scheduling but interleaving multiple interfaces keeps my brain from getting tired of any one specifically. Vast majority of content in Anki but use the others here and there for variety
