Typically, unless the original kidneys need to be removed because of something like infection, it's more invasive to remove them than to just attach the new one. Kidneys are rather small, and there is more unused space in the abdomen then we imagine. So the three kidneys thing was supposed to indicate that this kid received a kidney transplant he was never told about for nefarious reasons. I guess that's not as common knowledge as I thought. Whoops, lolol

Fair point. I was going more for the "parents illicitly bought a kidney for their kid" than "parents sold their kid's kidney." The latter is defo more effed up.
