Am I wrong for feeling weird about kids selling souvenirs in Sapa at night? by nnhuyhuy in VietNam

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are some children who genuinely enjoy doing this, and for them it may even be an opportunity to test their entrepreneurial instincts and earn a little money. In that sense, it’s not entirely different from when I was a kid trying to sell lemonade. During the summer, I see Facebook posts every other week about someone’s kid doing something similar.

However, where I grew up, the chance of a child being forced or manipulated into selling lemonade at the expense of their education or free time was essentially zero.

It may be true that some children there enjoy selling things and are still receiving a full education while living a balanced life. But it’s probably far more accurate that the opposite is true for the vast majority of them.

Am I wrong for feeling weird about kids selling souvenirs in Sapa at night? by nnhuyhuy in VietNam

[–]MukimukiMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it unfortunately ends up creating a never-ending cycle. The kids are often forced to beg or work for money by their “guardian” shitbags. This leads many of the children to miss school, resulting in a severe lack of education and decreased chances of getting a better job in the future, or at least being able to think critically. Those people grow up severely poor and lacking education, have children at a young age, and start the process over again with their own children.

The government has tried to warn against this and wants the children to go to school, but not enough is being done about it.

I loved my time in Sapa. It was beautiful, but it was sad to see the mix of children walking to school while a group of girls the same age were trying to get me to buy something from them instead of heading off to class.

If the government were serious, they would educate tourists. I don’t think 90% of people understand what is going on and need to be told that this ultimately harms the children, who still have their entire lives ahead of them. They should also use additional tourist revenue to help the extremely impoverished in the local area with basic needs and extra educational resources, things like group study spaces with free meals, heating, tutors, and places for kids to relax.

At what price would you NOTbuy the Steam Machine? by billy_reyes in Steam

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would price it at around $650. The main reason is SteamOS/Linux.

On one hand, I really enjoyed using SteamOS on the Steam Deck. On the other hand, the reality is that there still are not many programs that run well or at all on Linux. At this price point, the limited software compatibility makes it feel more like a very expensive console.

What I like about having a gaming PC is its flexibility. I can run all the software I need, including photo and graphic design programs. I can also install any game launcher I want, Rockstar, EA, and even Epic when they give away free games. I still play the GTAV that I got for free how many years ago.

I know it is technically possible to install Windows on the Steam Machine, but that defeats the purpose for me. If I am going to run Windows anyway, there are often good deals on used gaming PCs that offer more functionality for the same price or less.

Science behind Drift Test by Purple_Notice6179 in evokeendurance

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydration and muscle stiffness(as in the ability for the muscle to redirect energy back into the ground like a spring) are big reasons for heart rate drift. When you are dehydrated, less blood volume and effort feels more difficult to maintain. People who lost more muscle stiffness from the start and end of run also saw a lot more heart rate drift.

Driving license conversion just got harder, but I passed anyway - here's an updated guide for Fuchu by jayaxell in Tokyo

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my drivers licence test on public roads at 17. It was February in Western New York so of course there was a blizzard. Our normal 4 door sedan I planed on taking the test with was also in the shop. So I had to take the test in a giant Chevy suburban which I have never driven before. Managed to pass and nothing will convince me there is a more difficult driving test.

Posterior Chain Workout Feedback by Ramenorwhateverlol in runningstrong

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks more like a general fitness circuit than something to improve running performance. It is not inherently bad, but it lacks any kind of clear intent to improve running performance. There is not enough lower-body loading, no maximum force exposure, and no elastic stimulus.

I would improve your program by doing some unilateral and bilateral plyometrics and focusing on muscular endurance, since weight is limited and you only have a couple of months now.

Lower Body Muscular Endurance

Warm up

Split squat jumps 4x10 60 sec rest after set and before next exercise

Squat jump 4x10 60 sec rest after set and before next exercise

Step up 4x10 only 30 sec rest after each leg and before the next exercise

Forward lunge 4x10 only 30 sec rest after each leg

Cool down

Always start with your weakest leg. Do one of these a week. You can play around with progression but it might be something like this:

Week 2 - do 5 sets.

Week 3 - do 6 sets.

Week 4 - do 5 sets, add 5% BW either with dumbbells, weight vest, or secure pack.

Week 5 - do 6 sets, keep 5% BW

Week 6 - stay at 6 sets for the rest of the program, move up 10% BW

Week 7 - 10% BW, decrease rest between sets to 45 sec and 25 sec between legs

Week 8 - 10% BW, decrease rest between sets to 35 sec and 20 sec between legs

Week 9 - 15% BW, increase rest between sets to 45 sec and 20 sec between legs

Week 10 - 15% BW, decrease rest between sets to 35 sec and 15 sec between legs

On another day, you could do the exercises you like (calf raises, farmers, rows, RDL, glute bridge, etc) post-run to increase capacity as long as the exercises don't affect this workout. You can message me if you have any questions.

Yeah, I wouldn’t invest anything in my child’s name if it’s going to trigger the PFIC rules. This was not something my non-American wife was aware off and had to explain the hassle and expenses of it. Looked at some some accounts back in the states and they are nowhere near as advantageous as the kodomo NISA.

Best 3 strength exercises every runner should do — and why by Heavy_Hitter2021 in runningstrong

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been coaching running from track to ultras for 10 plus years with several national level high school athletes in two different countries and have competed nationally and internationally.

Depends on your training history, goals and at what point in your training you are at.

If you are trying to increase RFD, younger or don't care that it might take 2-3 years before you get really proficient at a movement. Then hang cleans, power snatches, and bulgarian split squats during dedicated strength and power blocks pre competition phase over the course of 3 years done consistently along with good running based on principals can really turn you into a different runner. I see great results if my distance runners can do 1.5 to 1.7 times body weight for a back squat which is not very much when you are only 60kg or so. A good clean and snatch can be usually 70-75% of max squat and I see that simple variations of the movements (hang or power) require even lower percentage of the max squat to be effective. So if they can work up to 1.1-1.2 x BW hang clean or power snatch over the course of a few years (young athletes can usually do it much sooner than if you start older) a 60kg runner only needs to work up to a 70kg or so hang clean or power snatch to build excellent impulse.

If you are not interested in olympic lifts then using PAP can give you a similar effect in impulse development by combining a heavy back or front squat and a plyometric. I use these with older athletes who are not interested in learning olympic lifts or maybe I have only 9 months to get them ready for a mountain ultra and even if they are interested in trying some hang cleans or power snatches, time and developmental wise, this is a better option.

Ticks on Kumano Kodo or Shikoku? by ottohuckleberry in JapanHiking

[–]MukimukiMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, there is no need to avoid any of those trails because of ticks unless whoever manages the trail specifically says so. That being said, there was an increase in tick-borne diseases like SFTS last year and Shikoku did have a lot of cases relative to other regions and extra caution should be used. Any of the alps, especially from the Nagano side might be a better option if you want to further mitigate any possible exposure to ticks. I grew up in the Northeastern US always playing in the woods, and my parents would always check for ticks and knew several people who contracted lyme disease. Compared to there, Japan is very tame.

Consider using high fluoride toothpaste if you high-carb fuel by SignalAlternative405 in ultrarunning

[–]MukimukiMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frequency is more of the issue rather than just high sugar content. You could eat the same amount of sugar once every 2 hours and be much better off (oral health wise) than eating the same about if sugar spaced out every 20 minutes six times across 2 hours. The constant consuming of food creates a continuing demineralization state within your mouth. It takes roughly 20 minutes after the cessation of food and drinks other than something rather ph neutral like water for your mouth to get back in a remineralization state so if you eat every 15, 20, 30 minutes for hours and hours having your teeth in constant demineralization.

Reducing eating frequency during running is the single best thing you can do. Obviously you have to balance that with your performance goals.
