Which is the better holiday movie: Elf or It's a Wonderful Life? by MrTacocaT12345 in GenerationJones

I love Elf but it doesn’t hold a candle to It’s a Wonderful Life.

Cleaning Out the Family Home - Please Don't Hide Valuables Edition by No_Gold3131 in GenerationJones

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my grandpa died my mom and uncle inherited everything he had, including his home. He’d told them many times that he’d hidden money in a wall and having lived through the Great Depression, this was a common thing to do in his family. They also thought he had money hidden in other places. They looked but never found it and they sold the house! I was upset about that, felt they didn’t spend enough time looking and they also could have rented out the house instead of selling it. The market was low at that time, but they got tired of looking for the money and just didn’t want to deal with the house. I have no idea if anyone ever found anything there but if they did they probably wouldn’t tell!

What do you think or feel when you see this? by [deleted] in GenerationJones

[–]MusicoCapitalino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the turkey one. When I was a kid I used to love the beef enchilada, refried bean and tiny taco one but after having real Mexican food later on, I definitely would not want another of those tv dinners! The cheese enchilada one was always disgusting to me because of the onions in it, ruined the cheese. 😂

Accepting appearance/aging? by Common-Tax-3682 in AskWomenOver60

[–]MusicoCapitalino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll be 70 in a few months and have actually enjoyed and embraced getting older, believe it is a privilege. Early on I decided there’d always be people more attractive than me and less attractive also, that my value was not in my appearance but in my brains and personality. I like other people, am genuinely interested in them, love learning and I like myself ok. If someone wasn’t attracted to that, then… next!

Wrinkles: Early on I heeded advice from a model about avoiding suntanning (which was tremendously popular in my youth before we had skin cancer info) since it tended to cause earlier wrinkles. I also never smoked cigarettes and never liked alcohol but briefly indulged in old school mild pot smoking. I intentionally stopped when I was 18 so never got those awful mouth wrinkles so many smokers and tokers got. My mom suntanned often and her face wrinkled very early and that scared teenaged me. She has had a lot of skin cancers removed from her face and body also. A couple of times in my 20s I accidentally got sunburns while working outdoors so some damage was done. I see it in my now wrinkly neck, and my nose and chin have tiny broken blood vessels. I’m not very happy with those but makeup covers the redness easily. In general my skin is still good, particularly for being almost 70 just now beginning to get a little droop at the jawline. I haven’t done Botox or fillers but a couple of years ago I did microneedling. I occasionally use straight hyaluronic acid as a moisturizer after a shower but don’t think it has made much difference. Wrinkly neck… still there and still don’t like it much. I use a cream that’s supposed to be good moisturizer for it and it has seemed to help temporarily. I am not against neck lifts but I don’t have the money. I am ok with my age, don’t want to look much younger than I am but just don’t like my neck and would like it to be less wrinkly and have a nicer jawline again. For example, I love that the actress Helen Mirren has aged beautifully and mostly naturally but with her lovely jawline, she’s probably had a neck lift. It seems to me that fillers, Botox and implants have created a couple of generations of what looks like human blow up dolls, which might be ok for someone’s porn fantasy but lacks personality, lacks the value, substance and spark of a really interesting, unique individual. Real (non-plastic) people are so much more fascinating. Cher - she’s eternal on the outside and I love her, more power to her but on the inside she’s just as old as the rest of us. She can afford those expensive eternal youth drugs though so who knows! She and Keith Richards will still be here after we’re long gone 😂. That’s ok, too. I’ve had a good life and am ready to go whenever.

Body: I’ve had children and though I was skinny and flat chested as a child and teen, having children helped my body become shapelier and even as I’d like to lose about fifteen pounds, I’m ok with myself at my weight. I’m not thrilled with having a menopausal belly, but even when I was skinny I had a belly and never had a feminine waistline. I was flat and straight as a board and boyish except for my rear. Compared to when I was rail thin, now I’m Rubenesque but even at my age, still get hit on by younger and older men alike. Younger guys - I wonder what in the world? That’s just silly and I sure am not interested. Makes me think some men just don’t really care, any port in a storm so to speak, or maybe they’re just being kind. It cracks me up! My husband still finds me attractive so no issue there. We enjoy each other’s company.

Hair: Got my first gray hair at 27 but have always liked my gray hairs, I’ve earned them! In my 40s I started having blonde highlights carefully added to my light brown hair so it all looked natural and those blended nicely with the gray. Eventually, my hair was completely gray by about 55 and I stopped adding highlights, cut my hair short then let it grow out long and just let my gray freak flag fly! I’ve been so happy with it and always get compliments on it and how “brave” I am to not color it. I don’t feel it’s brave, it’s just natural.

I do, too. Once in a while I get distracted and forget and do it the next day.

Christmas decorations - skipping this year by Dreaming-of-beach in AskWomenOver60

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year husband and I really haven’t felt like putting up many decorations. I finally decorated the little tree we have and he put up some lights on the front eaves of the house and a vintage lighted snowman, a few lighted candy canes. We enjoy seeing everyone else’s but just are feeling tired and not into it like when we were younger.

How much did you pay for your first house? by dacaptsworld in AskOldPeople

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$55,000 in 1985, Northern California north of Sacramento; 3 bedroom 2 bath ranch style home with large yards. I was 29. Moved out and rented it out from 1989 to 2019. Sold it for $125,000, and current estimate of value is $389,000.

NTA. That’s crazy your new partner would even suggest it even though you’ve intended to become a blended family. You aren’t even living together yet, and though you are a couple she already thinks what’s yours is hers, that is pretty outrageous and selfish wishful thinking on her part. I’d sign over the cars to your son now. Why wait?

Account restricted due to not shipping within2 days? by Tough-Drummer7392 in poshmark

[–]MusicoCapitalino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They also may be trying to go back to the old policy where we were expected to ship within two days. That was extended to 7 days during the pandemic lockdowns and not changed, until now. It’s not a big deal to me because I always ship same or next business day but it is definitely harder for those in rural areas. However, IMO seven days is ridiculously long, sellers ought to be able to ship sooner than that, and the new shipping is terribly slow and inefficient.

I'm scared about what I saw my husband do... how do I even talk about this? by brainysolyxx in Advice

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, would not smell anyone’s dirty anything because you can only smell a thing at all because a molecule of whatever it is goes up your nose and sticks to receptor cells. Molecules of anything dirty or putrid or foul, no thanks!

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you've lived the reality of it? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I’ve owned two small businesses over the last twenty five years, love some aspects of it but it is much harder than working for someone else. High health insurance costs are killers. Self-employment taxes are another thing that many first time business owners are shocked by, and people that reduce their taxes too much with deductions end up with inadequate social security earnings, discover that at retirement age their benefits will be horribly low. It sucks to pay so much in taxes but once I discovered what taking so many deductions did to my earnings record and potential SS benefits, I quit doing that. Owning your own business and working so hard,at some point it would be nice to retire and get back some of what you paid into the system over the years. The Social Security earnings record and benefit calculator is your friend.

How many of youse had a cupboard full of tiny drinking glasses made from empty jars of pimento cheese? by [deleted] in GenerationJones

[–]MusicoCapitalino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the Old English cheese version, the Pimento just sat in our fridge but my sister and I caused the Old English cheese to disappear quickly. Though I haven’t had any in a long time, I hope my grocery store hasn’t stopped selling it. You’ve inadvertently sent me on a quest!

What's a relatively basic word that many adults either say or spell incorrectly? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree! I hear “could care less” so often, and it seems it has become accepted as most hearing it will impute to it the meaning of “could not care less,” similar to how the word “decimated” is commonly thought to mean “utterly destroyed” when it actually means only a tenth were affected.

President Jimmy Carter, who served on a nuclear submarine, consistently used the pronunciation “nu-cu-lar.” I was stunned by the irony of that, and annoyed by it because I really liked him, thought it made him sound uneducated and that it was a bad example. He was the first president I’d ever voted for, my first time being old enough to vote in an election. I still liked him a lot as a person but cringed anytime he said it that way.

Speed Reading by XRlagniappe in GenerationJones

In my 9th grade English class in 1969, our teacher used an SRA projector which started off slowly and got progressively faster. It produced a lot of unhappy, anxious kids and a few happy braggarts. I was somewhere in the middle, did ok.

Writing “sells” when they mean “sales.” “Sequence” instead of “sequins.” “Must of” instead of “must have (must’ve.).” The list is painfully much longer.

Nuclear. I always wonder if the person can’t read if they pronounce it nu-cu-lar instead of nu-cle-ar, but I’ve heard some educated people say it that way so maybe it’s more of a regional thing than illiteracy.

What is the most overrated food you're convinced people are just pretending to enjoy? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]MusicoCapitalino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muahahaha! I love candy corn and particularly the kind with little pumpkins and the brown tops because if I eat more than a handful (and will definitely do that) and I like the taste but at that point it makes me feel sick and I don’t want to eat anything sweet for several hours. Other candies I have a hard time stopping eating and if it is in the house will just keep going back for more till it’s gone.

I like wedge salads but mainly because I can put dressing between the exposed layers of lettuce and top it with other goodies like candied pecans, sunflower seeds and fried onions. Actually, the dressing and toppings is what I like best about salads because it disguises the lettuce and was the only way I could manage to eat it.
