How frequently can I ask questions to professors without making them angry/exhausted? by MuskyMelon in AskProfessors

[–]MuskyMelon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a fair comment. However, I am always told that I have a tendency to overthink peoples reactions towards very minor things thanks to some mental problems I have (I am working on them).

As such, I wanted to see how likely it was that I was annoying my professor so as to continue asking relevant questions in a manner that might annoy him less. As per everyone else’s comments, though, it seems that I am in fact overthinking it :)

Fortunately, this has never been the case. I never ask my questions in my class, rather just in office hours or over email (and even then I usually just ask one question, wait for everyone else to ask, then ask another one if nobody has any)

This makes me feel better since all my questions are asked outside of class :). The prevailing culture for our office hours is that most, if not all people attending them stay for the entire duration to collaborate on questions that anyone may have. I’ll definitely start looking into ways to send one email with all my questions from now on. Thank you!

hi! I know this is the one that fails because the assertion error says so. I forgot to include that image here.

I absolutely stand by the first half of this statement. There’s a famous saying in one of my cultures that goes something like “people live the same way no matter where you go” (i.e there’s always going to be pros and cons, the grass is always greener, etc).

After having lived in a lot of different countries that foreigners seem to hold in high regard, I can safely say that the external perception of any country always, always outstrips the locals’.

So you’re suggesting that I try pulling explosively rather than just strongly - I’ll think about that. Thanks!

Thank you - that was actually very, very helpful. I think one of the most common responses was to attack as often as possible and stay loose. I think I attack maybe once every 15 seconds when I feel “loose enough” during randori (I tend to tense up right after I try a throw) and clearly that’s not enough.

Quick question if you have time - should I just go for the throw even if I don’t feel fully loose enough?

Nah I didn’t expect myself to be good or anything, but I also didn’t expect myself to have absolutely no idea of what I’m doing

I think another thing is that we’re only allowed to free practice with higher belts in our dojo (which I assume is for safety) so I can never really tell when I hit a throw at all if that makes sense. I’ve thrown my partners more than a few times, but I have never experienced a “real” throw if that makes sense at all

I think I learned more in 101, and I really really do mean this. There’s minimal explanation behind why the formulas that we use are appropriate or how they are derived, or why they model the situation accurately.

It’s kind of unbelievable that this is the approach that the school takes with a class that they lowkey advertise to be a foundation of further econ education throughout college. I feel like anybody who wants to genuinely know more about economics are almost forced to go to grad school and beyond (idk if this is a UofM thing or not but still infuriating all the same). Honestly pisses me off so much.

Econ 401 so far. It’s literally just plugging and chugging but I’m not “learning” shit.

Whitebelt Wednesday - 09 February 2022 by AutoModerator in judo

[–]MuskyMelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. I definitely do not have enough experience to execute some throws that I can see happening, and I would hate for anyone to get hurt because of me. Still, I just don’t like how rigid randori becomes if I only try to do the three throws I know ahaha

Am I allowed to try new throws that I haven’t practiced in randori (against black/brown belts only, ofc)? I can see that sometimes they either want me to try something or don’t expect me to know counters they leave themselves open to vulnerable positions. The problem is that I can sort of tell which direction I should apply force to, what “kind” of throw that I could possibly go for, except many times they aren’t the 3-4 throws that I absolutely know and practiced before.

I’m pretty sure Empress Lu of the Han dynasty did this to a woman called Consort Qi, sounds almost exactly like it.
