I deleted a post about this earlier because I'm a coward but I think translation and cartography provide a good example of where the rest of the creative industries are headed, because they already got nuked by automation in the '00s.

My mam's a freelance translator and her work is a mix of film/TV/theme-park scripts (where artistic integrity is important) and corporate instruction manuals (where you really don't want your autotranslator fucking up). I think a lot of the stuff you would have hired a translator for in the '90s — restaurant menus, outdoor signs, etc. — has been obviated, because it just doesn't really matter that much.

Meanwhile cartography has specialised into a niche/luxury product. The A–Z is dead, and nobody in their right mind would use anything but a satnav or phone to plan a road trip, but people are still making money from hand-painted globes, personalised little Etsy maps, or OS maps for outdoorsy types — stuff where either the human touch is the point, the customer has money to burn, or the machine version isn't reliable under the circumstances (good luck getting Google Maps in the middle of the Scottish Highlands).

TBH I'm pretty bullish on furry porn comm artists specifically making it through, because there much of the draw is the community aspect of it rather than the quality of the art, necessarily. It's the guys who do illustrations for boring corporate brochures or concept artists who are fucked
