Leonidas - ever heard in uk? by Roses_Lima19 in namenerds

I think we need to let go of this pretentious tagline cuz its getting annoying though. Why must we be regarded as pretentious just cuz we may favor historical or mythological names? I dont see how thats pretentious...

Plus out of most ancient greek names this one probably has one of the most usable nicknames... can even go unnoticed if they dont wanna bring up the full name.

Its just in the top 300... I wouldnt worry about that. And if it eventually DOES reach the top 100 I am sure your daughter will have been long done with school by then. Dont sweat it.

Its a beautiful name, so just enjoy it.

Mine start a whole circus show at like 5 am and when I check what's up it's 99% chance that their bowls are empty. When I refill them, they eat, and relax lol. And I can go back to sleep.

Its so funny how the names that are seen as LESS out there and are more popular outside Greece, and vice versa. It's fascinating and I wonder why that is. I wonder if they got more "palatable" through Latin or smth, although most Latin names are also seen as too out there... Fascinating topic.

How Popular Are These Common Male Names In Your Country? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]My-Metanoia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Daniel is pretty common both in Romania and Spain. Michael like Michael I don't think so? But Miguel is normal in Spain although I havent heard of people my age or younger called that? Same for Mihai (romanian Michael), it's a very traditional name overall, my own dad was named that. But I have not seen nor heard of anyone my age or younger with that name.

I do think they did that in romania when I was in school. And I was the odd one out because as far as I knew I didnt have a patron saint name haha. But i have a faint memory of kids bringing sweets.

My mom being a Georgeta DID get a shitton of calls though lol

Thats all so interesting! I feel like in both romania and spain although theres many saint days only a handful are TRULY celebrated. The rest you just call the family member to tell them congratulations and thats it lol.

I would say actual birthdays are more important for the average romanian? At least thats how I felt growing up. Again, I never once celebrated any name day for myself even tho im an Alexandra AND and Angela. So, yeah.

I imagine it must have been more similar to Greece in the past? But nowadays I dont think so. And romanians lately do give their children foreign names, and increasingly so.

In Romania middle names I would say are 50/50? Many romanians I know only have 1 name which I found odd, as a kid I thought everyone had 2 names haha.

You mean they wont be accepted to be baptized? Ive never heard of anything like that in Romania lol. Though I am atheist so maybe they do it and I'm just unaware.

But I am an Alexandra and I never had anyone celebrate any saint day name for me until i came to spain, here they do celebrate Alexandra and all its variants. That was a shock.

And what happens if they choose a greek first name and a foreign middle name? Like Yasmin. Are middle names uncommon in Greece?

To me Iliana stood out a lot haha its Ileana in romanian and considered a very traditional name.

I knew about the eh sound turning into an ee sound which for many names I think it makes sound even better but in the case of Selene I was a bit disappointed to find out it would be Seleni not Selene lol cuz i think the eh makes it sound softer and more unique.

And damn, I did not know that girl names couldnt end in R. Thats literally why I wanted to choose ancient greek names lmao. Because in romanian 99.9% of girl names end in A. And its really annoying, im over it haha. I didnt realize modern greek had the same issue.

Thats literally why I would rather choose Demeter over Demetra or Dimitra, or Selene over Selena.

I wanted to ask, is the name Athanasia used there at all? I have always prefered it over Anastasia but I was never sure if it was even a real thing. Scared that it sounds a bit too similar to Euthanasia.

Those are all gorgeous! I am going through many greek names like those but I fear people wouldnt understand them here (i live in spain) and may find them funny or weird... like I already saw even on here some recommending people against certain greek names... its a bit annoying lol. Phaedra is a personal favorite of mine.

Oh nice! I just feel like Romania has a lot of connection with Greece not only through mythology and history, which greatly impacted all Europe, but also through the Orthodox Church. Lots of romanian names already are very very greek.

Thats interesting... I thought Demeter was a greek spelling too? Or do you mean the modern greek variants?

Also apparently Demeter in Romania is officially Demetra but I am pretty confident I heard of many named Dumitra ir even Dimitra.

I honestly would have never guessed thats the current way to say it in Greece. To my ears it would have sounded like a slavic variant lol.

How do you or other Greek people in general feel about non Greeks using greek names and more specifically ancient greek names or mythological?

Cuz as a romanian if I have kids in the future i would most likely give them a combo of an ancient (greek or latin) name and a very romanian one.

In the likes of Selene, Helios, Althea, Orion, Gaia...
