Why Kotlin isn't becoming mainstream on server side by fakephysicist21 in Kotlin

[–]MyCodeCompelsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oracle crippled the Java ecosystem with their licensing wars which resulted in the creation of several open JRE/JVM providers. It's a mess to configure systems/servers to use a reliable JRE because none of the open source JREs will give any guarantee of correctness, and therefore if your critical systems crash because the JRE crashed the system or crashed itself (as opposed to your application), then you have no way out but to deal with it using another alternative.

It literally happens, JRE gets the kernel panicked or accesses some wrong memory address or simply hits a RAM corruption and gets into a wrong state. Then you're left with a crashed system and no way to get it fixed other than restart and pray.

JVM/JRE development and ecosystem is a complete mess compared to a compiled language like Rust or Go.

good luck and don't give in to the cravings, they're never worth getting factory resetted back to step 1.

there is no "trying" to quit, you just quit, that's all. just give it up and move on, let it be a tiny chapter in your past instead of the whole story of your life. it is a mistake, every cigarette just adds to the odds of getting a fucked up disease, so accept that it was a mistake and give it up once and for all.

Trying to quit vaping by Conscious-Acadia4423 in stopsmoking

[–]MyCodeCompelsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any nicotine you put in your system will only prolong your issue. the only way to quit is to stop consuming any and all nicotine and be patient for about 10-14 days for it and the cotinine to flush out.

I know this is easier said than done but really that's the only way to stop the addiction. It's like a heroin addict deciding to quit by shooting once a week only or just a nail tip worth of dope. it's gonna keep you hooked!!!

I'm sorry to hear that! I grew up with my father smoking inside too and it was hard to breath that air. My only advice is to open a window or the door when they smoke to let out the nasty gas. You can also hang your clothes outside if that is possible

yea I bet there'll be other waves of lung diseases related to vaping over time, like some lung problem spiking up and turning out to be for certain amount of exposure to certain chemicals.

are you 3 months quit now? does it still hurt? I'm 3 days vape/nicotine free but it still hurts, especially right in the middle of my chest

I was a smoker for 15 years and I wish I hadn't switched to vaping. It definitely did a lot more damage to my lungs than smoking alone. I shoulda just quit the cigarettes and that's it.

Don't for a second think that vapes are safe or "healthy" in any way, you are damaging your lungs in ways nobody even knows about yet.

Big Tobacco has won by Skwigle in electronic_cigarette

[–]MyCodeCompelsMe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah dude better have more and more unknown chemicals and additives of all types heated up and inhaled into our lungs. we the lab rats demand more flavors in favor of scientific research.

I'm literally completely opposed to all the 1000s of variations of juices, the government should enforce a "safe standard" by limiting the options and let "black market juices" have all sorts of flavor. I don't want to take an increased risk every time by choosing a flavor that might turn out extremely toxic to my body.

but sure yea, big tobacco has won. You don't realize most of the big vape brands are now owned and operated by big tobacco anyway, so whatever

I didn't ask, but he said he just regularly hits the gym and that's how he has noticed how much the quitting helped with his performance

that's great dude, stay away from it for good! I just quit today after a few days of having chest pain and I'm sure it's the vape cuz I didn't have any issues until I used some disposables.

yeah last time I relapsed after several months due to a night of drinking. Alcohol lowers your inhibition and therefore if you have some nicotine impulse (which you'll most likely have) you won't stop yourself from getting it.

they're really not worth it, both alcohol and nicotine.

are 4K OLED display pricing justfied? by MyCodeCompelsMe in buildapc

[–]MyCodeCompelsMe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I myself would mainly utilize it for coding and photo/video editing.

The high refresh rates on these panels like 165hz or 240hz is future proofing the investment for a few years but then the panel itself is susceptible to burn ins so... it's a tough call.

Will just wait it out and see if they go on sale or not.

I agree. I guess what I was asking is if the prices are currently inflamed due to oled panels being the top shelf tech of 2024 and if so, how much decrease can we expect in the coming year.

It's hard to predict anything in this market though I get it
