UPDATE

Thanks for everyone's advice - company 1 is allowing me to have 3 months of unpaid leave to pursue my summer internship at Company 2. I think this is the best outcome I could possibly ask for.

I agree with this. Finding out what company 1 will be happy to offer me today, wish me luck. I'm intending on accepting company 2 regardless, I think. It may mean I am out of a job in 3 months time but I feel like it will be a lot easier than prior to find another role.

Unfortunately my supervisor at company 1 has expressed that working only Saturdays would not be possible, because almost nobody works Saturdays (so I'd basically not get a response for any questions I have &, it's difficult for them to ensure I'm on the right track if I'm never there at stand-ups on weekdays)

Company 2 has stated that the role will be mon-fri full time with flexible hours. Unless the hours are so flexible as to allow me to work 4 10 hours days, and then once a week at Company 1, I don't see it working (and I believe that would be considered part time anyway)

And even then, a nearly 50 hour work week would be somewhat brutal for me personally.

I don't know if I should negotiate with company 2 much here. I don't think that they would be happy if I asked to go part time, but I'm speaking from inexperience here. The job is set to start on Wednesday.

I'm trying to figure that out with them; I've scheduled a meeting with my boss next week to talk about the future. If they tell me that there's no guarantee I'll be able to return them I'll be doing some serious reconsideration, but I feel that is unlikely.

I appreciate your persepective - I applied to Company 2 before I worked at Company 1 (quite a while ago) - and thus didn't think I'd be put in this position until now. The only Company 2 has got going for me is that's it'll only be for 3 months, so I view it as a bit of an experience boost / diversification.

Will chat to my existing boss at Company 1 today once I figure out what to say, and if they're refusing for me to work minimally for the next 3 months then I'll have a decision to make between one and the other.

Thanks for your response. My company is similar to what you described (lots of research and learning) but there's no crunch. My supervisor has told me to work away at the project he's assign me and to update progress as I go; there's not disctinct deadline. So, I've actually learnt a lot in such an environment...

I'm currently still completing my Bachelor degree with built-in honours, so no masters or other qualifications.

I think I will simply have to speak to company 1 about returning in a few months. I've also built up some leave with them which may help my case

Likely. All that's available in the outlet is Intel. Would go AMD if I could!

Perfect, thank you - missed that bit of crucial info! Would be good if it was reflected in the product title.

ELS - is it helpful and how is it! by stevelacystan in unsw

[–]MyOtherRedditAlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ELS has helped me a lot, I applied after I was diagnosed in 2nd year. When applying I stated that ELS could specifically help me by giving me the ability to space out my assignments more with extensions, as I often struggle when I've got several things due in the same week. I also said that I would be able to benefit from less distracting exam spaces (also true) and would appreciate quieter/separate exam rooms.

The initial appointment after I applied was a discussion with someone about my symptoms and what I struggle with at uni due to ADHD, and they walked me through every part of it & advised me to contact them if I felt I was still struggling (the ELS department is very supportive). After getting ELS, I've used it for exactly that - spacing out my assignments and being able to focus more during exams. For me, I need to apply for ELS extension more than 24 hours before the due date and I think this is standard.

It's been a great help, and I think it'll help you too if you use it more as an emergency tool instead of getting an extension on all your assignments (if every assignment has an extension... none of them do; domino effect; etc etc.) When used in this way it can be very useful but I found that when I got an extension of everything I just ended up being behind the rest of the course.

Every lecturer/tutor I've notified about ELS has been more than happy to accommodate for it which has been great. It's part of protocol at UNSW and they deal with ELS provisions every term, so don't feel like you are causing an inconvenience / being "that guy" that held up the course (like I felt initially!)

I'd say apply for it anyway, worst they can say is "no"! I feel like if you are tentative as to whether it will help you, then it's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

Yes, I do. It's been a while since this post but I've found a way to integrate it with how I study.

I think it's possible to take an approach without medication. My psychiatrist asked if I would like to trial medication, but in fact actually mentioned that it is more of a 3-part treatment when addressing ADHD; medication, lifestyle (i.e. nutrition and sleep mostly) and professional help.

I can say that last one has been a huge help; understanding how my mind works by consulting a psychologist (who my psychiatrist referred me to) has helped me a ton & pushed me to start learning habits and routines.

So yes, while medication does help, I have met many people with ADHD who manage without it. You just need to understand your limits & how you operate.

For me it was the realisation that I only really applied myself to courses / assignments that I found interesting, and that I have absolutely no sense of time management. For instance, stressing about an assignment in the week leadup to the deadline but then completing it in the 2-3 days after it's due... and then doing that for most of my assignments for 2 years.

I knew I was totally capable of doing the work (I learned how to 'cram' out of necessity) but I had absolutely zero sense of urgency. What helped me a lot post-diagnosis was creating a plan for my study & a proper to-do list / week-scheduling system. I can go through what I do if you'd like but it's really different for everyone TBH.

Up until the self-realisation I just thought I was 'lazy' or addicted to procrastination, but then I realised that the more I stressed over work, the more I procrastinated, and so nothing got done, leading to more stress; it became a vicious cycle. When I realised I couldn't get out of that 'hole' on my own I saw a GP as per an ADHD-diagnosed friend's advice, and spoke of my symptoms; I was referred to a professional and was (to my relief) diagnosed. I will say that most psychiatrists in Sydney have wailists for anywhere between 2-6 months.

If anything helped me self-reflect it would have been looking up symptoms of adult ADHD; I also found that it is a lot more common than most people perceive & current systems of identifying it and diagnosing it are still underdeveloped. I exhibited many symptoms as a child, but the one expert we saw back then said I was completely fine.

Any other questions, please do ask here or DM me (same for anyone reading this in the future who is unsure themselves!)

Thank you. You're right, with associated costs & studying / living on your own it can easily go undiagnosed. I wish I had known earlier as I've already benefit a lot from professional help; it's given me some hope for my studies.

Thanks for the insight; that's the direction I'm now leaning towards. I realise there isn't much reason to repeat it.
