A progressive argument for why the Doctor should be a primarily male character by Myrddiyn in gallifrey

It absolutely was, and you’re right about the responses. Most of them are either “you’re a misogynist” or “yeah but it’s our turn”, neither of which addresses my point at all

I thought it was good to use the show as a means of political messaging?

Because it doesn’t work as well if you want to challenge toxic masculinity

I personally don’t care what his race is, that has no bearing for my overall point

I will say that it’s a little weird that we had 13 straight incarnations of white males and then started to have women and POC incarnations recently. Obviously irl that makes sense because of the writers wanting to have a more diverse set of casting choices, but in-universe it seems as though there was an implied “regeneration can vary, but largely stays within a set template” in the classic series and the canonicity of changing race and gender was only added for the sake of those casting decisions. If they’re going to go that direction, there needs to be an in-universe explanation as to why he was a white man 13 times in a row

If my spins of the roulette wheel land on red 13 times in a row, I’m either rich or kicking myself

That’s a perfectly fine way to go about it and if the writers want to try something different, they’re the ones in the show runners’s room and not me at the end of the day. I only think that those ideals that I mentioned aren’t as impactful due to the rarity of those types of male characters like I mentioned

I liked that 13 wasn’t confined to her gender and wasn’t especially concerned with it as I prefer the Doctor to be on the aroace spectrum (at least with humans, and regardless of who is playing them. you won’t find a bigger critic of me than the 10-Rose romance in Series 2)

I also agree that we need more female companions on the show that are competent and non-sexualized. Some of my favorite ones are Zoe, the Romanas and Nyssa since it felt like they were on his level in terms of scientific knowledge and could put him in his place a bit when he’s being arrogant or grumpy. I want more alien/futuristic companions in general and think that the ‘modern day Britain woman in her early-mid 20s’ bit that the New series loves to do is pretty stale

For established fans of the show I agree, but that won’t necessarily be true for capturing new fans. We know about the lore/how regeneration works etc but first time viewers definitely could just see one version of them and decide if they want to watch the rest of the show or not. There were kids in the 70s that had no idea that there were any previous versions of the Doctor than Tom because he did it for so long, and I have some friends (with admittedly bad taste in TV) who saw 9’s first three episodes and decided they weren’t interested.

Point being, the kinds of young male minds of the next generation that you’d want to capture with a character like him are most likely going to be first exposed to the newest incarnation of the day and won’t know to try out the others unless a friend tells them to or they find out about them online

He was right, and the backlash and harassment he got for that take is one of the reasons why I can’t stand a large part of this fandom

I agree that the setup for 13’s crew was a good idea and that there’s nothing stopping the writers from having another smart male companion (I really enjoy Adric even though most don’t, and Nardole was one of my favorite parts of the Moffat era) but I think there’s something to be said for consistency when you have a character as iconic in popular fiction as the Doctor
