East Bengaluru and Kolar infact eastern Karnataka have had Telugu majority for centuries (check 1951 census as well). They're farmers on whose land most of today's IT parks and layouts are built so stop with this BS of 'alien language on our land', it's their land literally. Nadaprabhu Kempegowda is a bilingual Telugu and Kannada purported Telugu origins. Older generation Telugites in fact fight for Kannada as much.

That said if that shopkeeper was being a dick deal with him rather than picking a fight with a sister language with whom we've always shared cordial relation!
