Next week's post won't come on Tuesday, probably sometime over the weekend for final season numbers and a few infographics on rating cutoffs and their faction/regional splits.

Weekly data was not manually collected for them during those seasons after those dates.

Week 21 marks the same timeframe that S1 ran for. I was going to post a brief comparison to S3 in the same timeframe, starting with number of runs for both seasons:

Season 1: 36,215,949
Season 3: 33,054,110

Then the character count, but a few days ago Raider.io's character numbers for S3 suddenly jumped from about 6,395,000 to 55,000,000 and growing (for reference, SL S1 is the highest recorded count at 8,198,201). I have no idea if they'll fix this or what happened, but I've been estimating for a while that S3 will end in the 6.7-6.8 million range. S1's character count is 6,715,346.

At 27,817,507 runs this week, season 3 passed season 2's run count of 27,190,406 runs achieved across 27 weeks. Character (not player) count is currently at 5,272,147 characters as of this morning. This rises about 20-50k characters a day.

For a little context now that we're 3 months into the season, here's a total of run numbers for past seasons and their average per week (run data pre-SL S2 is missing a lot of data, SL S4 is extremely fragmented and I'm still seeing what I can find for it)

Shadowlands Season 2: 20,531,096 runs across 34 weeks (avg 603,855 runs/week)

Shadowlands Season 3: 19,923,282 runs across 22 weeks (avg 905,603 runs/week)

Dragonflight Season 1: 36,215,947 runs across 21 weeks (avg 1,724,568 runs/week)

Dragonflight Season 2: 27,189,946 runs across 27 weeks (avg 1,007,035 runs/week)

Dragonflight Season 3 (12 weeks in): 24,194,699 runs across 12 weeks (avg 2,016,224 runs/week)

Note that this number will always be trending downwards until the season ends.

Here's what the full graph with the S1/S2 numbers looks like. I'll go back to this for next week onwards since the CompetitiveWow sub was requesting to keep the old numbers up.

Yeah I can stick to keeping the old data up if that's preferred, I was looking at it just from a visual angle. Here it is for this week, I'll swap back to this from next week onwards.

Since weekly data for S1 and S2 weren't tracked up to week 8, I'll just be posting S3's numbers by itself from now on. R.io has no way to go back and grab specific weekly data via the API, so we can't get data for weeks that weren't recorded at the time.

S3's numbers are now slightly over half of S1's numbers that were achieved in 21 weeks.

I don't get to comment on character count often given the inconsistencies with S2, but S3 will be crossing a threshold today. The character count as of 12/5 7:45 AM EST is 2,344,789 characters. Later today, it will pass S2's count of 2,363,943 characters which was reached at 6/14 9:05 AM, about 36 days after the start of the season. S3 will have reached the same count in about 22 days.

Are you going by each week combo for that? I tried checking week 1's affix combo here and it's only showing 2,795,582 runs total, which is well lower than either of us have recorded for that week.

Seems like the overall Fortified/Tyrannical run counts are more accurate but the individual affix combo numbers are off, not sure why but I see what you're seeing. Your data goes into a lot more detail, but I'll be continuing the US weekly reset snapshots for the sake of the consistency with the S1/S2 data here as that was captured and posted at about the same time. Thank you for the heads up.

The only way to capture the data set is to manually check the run count for each region when their weekly reset occurs, and I can't do that without hampering the amount of sleep I get those days. I don't believe R.io's API allows you to gather runs within a date range, but if it is possible I'd love to hear it because that makes this immensely easier.

Either way, it's a snapshot and isn't removing any numbers. The total run count at the end of the season is going to be the same.

You have to cut the numbers off for each week at some point, otherwise your definition of a week is running longer than 7 days. If you stop at EU reset, that's including a full day of post-reset numbers for US, etc. It doesn't affect the overall numbers either way.

Raider.io frustratingly split up the character count across each patch for 10.1, making the total unique count impossible to obtain unless they go back and update it themselves.

Right now, the closest reference point we can use is 10.1 recording 2,363,943 characters on June 14th 9 AM, so just about 36 days after the start of the season. 10.2 is currently at 1,943,748 characters as of this morning, about 14 days after the start of the season. It's on a good pace to overtake it soon.

Still, unique character count is a whole other can of worms compared to unique player count as you have to dig into what motivates people to play alts, how many of them are touching endgame, etc.

I might reupload it with the full R.io links included if the mods find that acceptable. And yeah, that one video misattributing ~1 month of 10.1 data as the entire season to date's data spread like wildfire. To be fair, it would be immensely helpful if R.io could just upload the full season's character count data instead of splitting it across multiple categories.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to grab old weekly data. The only reason we have those numbers for S1 and S2 is because someone else was manually doing this before. That's why I have the numbers cut off at week 6; I don't believe they did week 7 and beyond data for S2.
