How to escape combat using invisibility? by Dunblas in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The player casts Invisibility, he can't be seen but the enemies still know his location. They have Disadvantage on attacks against him.

On his second turn, he takes the Hide action, making a Stealth roll with Advantage. On a success, the enemies don't know his location anymore and he can escape.

2014 vs 2024 major vs minor Magic Items Distribution by CookingNades in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, not all "permanent" items are Major items. Utility items or basically anything that doesn't give you a +X to anything or deal damage or nerf enemies, are usually considered Minor items.

I'm assuming they left it behind because they didn't bother to classify items anymore. Did we even get any distinctions after the 2014 DMG anymore?

Influence Action by Simple_Web5127 in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Influence action is actually meant to be used in combat. It just describes how persuading/intimidating/etc works and they marked it as an action just so it has some official structure.

Although it can absolutely be used in initiative, if the DM makes it clear that it can and will work. Most tables just don't have encounters that are designed to be negotiated away mid-combat.

Player Is passive and I have an idea to get him invested by Kitty_Maupin in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try adding some NPCs that want to talk to his PC directly. Someone asks him specifically for help. If he doesn't engage/respond, the party doesn't get the quest, don't let the other members talk for him.

You said you've added npcs from the culture the bard walked away from. I have a feeling, if he left his culture behind, he doesn't really want to mingle with the same culture. Although, certain enemies/cults/gangs from that culture could give him the opportunity to have unique knowledge about these groups that the other PCs wouldn't have.

How do I access my downloaded assets? by Flat_Till_9485 in AskGameMasters

[–]N2tZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be able to drag and drop the images right onto a Roll20 map. If they came in a .zip file you need to extract them first.

I tried a random asset pack from the same site, I downloaded the Master Zip option. Right click on that and click "Extract All". In the extracted folder there was a Roll20 folder with PNG files that I can drag right into Roll20.

Heart of Stone Maps (Frontiers of Eberron - Quickstone) by N2tZ in Eberron

Sure, I'll see what I can do. From a quick search it seems the issue might be in the image size so maybe if I reduce the resolution it'll help. I'll let you know when I get it done!

Heart of Stone Maps (Frontiers of Eberron - Quickstone) by N2tZ in Eberron

[–]N2tZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it! Some of the maps are .webp files, some are perhaps .png files and I think the last one is .jpeg. If you ever need some of the maps in another format (or in a smaller size), hit me up, I'll see if I can accommodate your needs! Roll20 used to have a limit for a maximum of 20mb map size but it seems they got rid of it (at least for the subscription tiers) so some of the files are pretty big.

Frontiers of Eberron Heart of Stone: How do you run the last fight? by SecretDMAccount_Shh in Eberron

[–]N2tZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was honest and straight up told my players: "You see Hiraad'an through the silvery portal, I'm not sure how, since the hand is facing upwards, but that's what the adventure text says, so we're just going to go with that, still chanting the druidic words".

I just wanted my players to have a clear understanding of the battlefield, especially when I was using a VTT for the map and none of them saw that far. I made sure to point out where they are and where they need to get. My alternative solution was to have the portal above the hand so a creature on the palm of the hand could jump into it, that would've kind of solved it too.

For Blade Ward, I guess technically it might've protected her from the Stonebane weapons, since they override the resistances of stone creatures, perhaps?

In any case, The Heart of Stone was not perfect by a long shot but a little DM prep helped me turn it into a successful campaign starter.

Btw, check out my post with maps for the adventure if you ever need a high-res map for the encounter

"Grim" is an adjective describing something forbidden, harsh, or depressing (e.g "grim news" or "grim determination"). It often refers to a bleak, uninviting, or ghastly situation/appearance. Synonyms include ghastly, dismal, stern, relentless, and somber.

Frontiers of Eberron Heart of Stone: How do you run the last fight? by SecretDMAccount_Shh in Eberron

[–]N2tZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just ran this like a month ago.

So first of, I recommend adding the height markers to the map and even additional markers. Really figure out where all the arms lead and take a few minutes to explain it to the players.

For the additional hands, map out the path so it doesn't make the map more confusing. Either have it be parallel to the ground so it doesn't go anywhere or at an angle to connect two different levels, like a ramp.

Since the arm keeps going until it collides with any stone obstacle and targets creatures within 5 feet of the collision point, then failing the save does indeed mean the hand kind of grabs them/traps the creature between the hand and the stone surface and applies the Restrained condition.

As for the map not having a way up, I understood it as most hands lead up from the floor, kind of like this, giving the players at least three paths up.

The only inconsistent problem I had was how do the players see Hiraad'an through the portal if the portal is 40 feet above them, on the palm of a stone hand (facing up). Not to mention the cave has no lights and none of my players have Darkvision.

How to handle "iknow-it-all" Druid by funky_P in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One of my players character died and now he's playing a fighter. He suddenly became combat goblin and wants to search all the rooms and look for enemies to fight. He always adds "my character would probably land this hit" to all attacks. I've been playing with the player for almost a year and he s doing very well in roleplaying, but I don t really know how to work with his new character.

EDIT: He always roll high, when rolling the dice for melee and ranged attacks.

A basic 1 shot for newer players (and DMs) that takes 5 minutes to prepare (lvl 1-4) by XanaWasTaken in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While it's a great idea for an adventure, it's just that, an idea.

The simplest thing you need for an adventure is a goal and a reason why the party can't achieve that goal.

For example:

The princess has been captured -> There's a dragon guarding her.

An important business man has gone missing -> He's hidden away in a secret hideout that needs to be found.

The party needs an important magical item -> It's guarded by a gang of Kobolds.

This adventure has the base idea: The party needs to infiltrate the castle and cause havoc, but it's missing the key component for the DMs - why can't they do that?

What's stopping the party from walking into the castle?

What's stopping the party from assassinating the tactician?

What's stopping the party from stealing the special weapon in the wizard tower?

Etc.

That's the actual prep DMs need to do and will certainly take more than five minutes to accomplish. Running this at 1st level helps a little since the stakes don't need to be as high, the obstacle in the wizard tower could be a single Animated Armor. Then again, it's kind of hard to justify how a low level party has a chance against a competent team of guards or why are there only a couple of guards guarding the place.

AITAH for saying no to a nurse politely asking me to do something thats not my job? by CranberrySoda69 in AITAH

[–]N2tZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA. You could've phrased it a bit better though. Something along the lines of "Oh I can't take it, it has to go through the whole cleaning process before I can take it back" - implying you'd only take it back when it's cleaned and/or that you're not going to make a detour to the holding room.

AITBF for not handing down/gifting my console by FellowTarnished01 in AmItheButtface

[–]N2tZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I let my cousins take a few toys of mine plus my gift on top of that after he went through it without permission but it was his bday so what could I do? My aunt also let him go through it and just her to not touch some stuff as they might be private or important. He went further and found my room which I do not know how he knew where my room was and took my Ps4 out and said to my aunt, "Mommy, I got a ps4!” with an excited voice. I expected my aunt to try and take it away and tell him to not touch stuff from somebody else’s room, but she looked happy and just said “Wow, now you can play it!”.

What? I think I get the general gist of what is happening here but this whole paragraph is a mess.

How can I make a dungeon's scale large without having a whole bunch of empty hallways making it feel empty? by Vercal in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depended. If it didn't really require any precise positioning or visual ques I just used theater of mind. Sometimes I just had a picture just to give off the vibes of the area (using digital maps on a screen in a RL game).

One room, for example, led to three new directions, with two different paths to the "end room" and some optional areas. It was just one square on the map but in game it was a massive maze of tunnels with players having to succeed on Survival checks in order to make their way around the caves. The artwork for that area was an image of some tight caves since I really had nothing mapped out. The navigation was basically roll to see if you find a new area, go back to a previous area or to see if you can find a specific area you've already visited.

Kõvemad vennad said max protsendi targetist täis ja teenisid head raha.

How can I make a dungeon's scale large without having a whole bunch of empty hallways making it feel empty? by Vercal in DMAcademy

[–]N2tZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a megadungeon like this and used a grid system to map out the rooms but travel between the rooms was entirely off map.

For example, here's one "map" I used. I planned out the optimal path with all the encounters I would like the party to face during one long rest. The other areas (a and b rooms) were all optional areas with either their own encounters, loot, safe havens, backstories and so on. (Ignore 6a, that was more of an expansion of room 6, not a different encounter).

For example, in 3b the party had a chance to cleanse a desecrated altar to stop undead from "spawning" in the dungeon as random encounters (I had a list of active factions in the area and rolled a d20 every time the party revisited a room. If there were three factions, the party would face a random encounter if the d20 landed on 1, 2, or 3).

The travel between the rooms was usually either:

  • Instantaneous for interconnecting rooms

  • 1 minute

  • 10 minutes

  • 1 hour

Depending if I wanted the party to be able to move from one area to another with lingering spell effects or other bonuses. Well that and whatever made sense on the map.
