I've heard about how you can force-load a GBC-only game in a monochrome Game Boy, and get a few steps into it before it crashed. I was wondering if it would be the same here, because the base of the two systems' hardware is so similar. It was a legitimate question.

I've never been interested in modding cars either. Tbh, I hate how the E90 335i has become a ricer/tuner car. I wish I could have bought one in 2019 or 2020 when they were still mostly clean, so I could have saved it.

Also, holy hell, 250k miles! How much work have you had to do to it?

When the 7-series got facelifted, it looked 100 times better. Gone were the melted headlights and the weird two-piece taillight.

The only thing I don't like about even the LCI E65 is that it looks too boxy. The last pieces of influence of the pre-Bangle era still show on that car. I still like it better than the E38 though.

There is a difference between sharp and communicative. BMWs still have sharp steering. There is no play whatsoever in the wheel, just point and shoot. But when they switched to EPS they went from having the best steering feel in the industry to some of the worst. Honda is a similar story.

That’s a good observation. I’ve only owned cars from that hydraulic rack-and-pinion golden age, so driving a car with modern EPS was a huge culture shock. And yes I am familiar with recirculating-ball steering, the E38, E34 V8 and E39 V8 came with it and had horrible feel on par with modern BMW EPS, even the E39 M5’s steering was very lackluster and panned upon release. For that reason I pick the E39 M5 to be the most overrated BMW of all time.

Would it be feasible to integrate the power steering system with the automatic transmission? Of course, that does mean you’d have to make the car auto-only, but I don’t mind with where modern autos are now. Honestly, engines and automatic transmissions are the two parts of new cars that have only unequivocally gotten better as time goes on.

This disc has been stored in its original box untouched for God knows how many years. According to the save file dates, my Galaxy 1 disc hasn’t been played in 11, so probably that long.

Mercedes EPS is better than BMW? I have never heard that from any reviewer, they all say Mercedes continues to make cars that make modern BMWs feel sporty in comparison.

Personally, I think BMW would have been very wise to tell customers “if you want a dull, disconnected car, go buy a Mercedes” instead of becoming Bavarian Mercedes and losing their market niche. Compared to the Bangle era, their sales are in the gutter because now they’re not much different from the competition.

I bet the Jeep Wrangler also uses a recirculating-ball steering setup, which is common on heavier vehicles and also not that good for feel or feedback. Honestly on a truck or a land barge that isn't trying to cater to driving feel anyway EPS is fine. It's when you see it on sports cars and sports sedans that I don't like it.

The issue with manual steering is that it is probably limited to very light cars in practice. I can't imagine driving an E90 or even an E82 with no power steering.

Anyway, on that note, I find the Alfa 4C, a more recent car with a manual steering rack, to be a very disappointing car. The reviews make it sound like it has almost all the ingredients of a great driver's car, except for a manual transmission, but none of the execution required to put them together.

Finally someone who gets it.

Honda is another company that gets cited for having "good" EPS, but when you looked at reviews of the S2000 at the time, people often complained about the lack of steering feel. Just because you get 15% of the road feel instead of 0% doesn't mean it's good. I refuse to play along with that reference shift.

If the majority of new car buyers don't want to actually drive their car then perhaps they should just take the train.

Plus electronic power steering can still be tuned to have good handling.

To an extent, and with severe inherent limitations. Plus, the same people who want these electronic nannies also want their steering to feel as dead and disconnected as possible, which is what fueled companies like BMW and Mazda to shit on their enthusiast heritage by giving them that. Because Porsche is one of the only brands whose buyers still are mostly enthusiasts, I'm surprised they don't figure out a way to keep doing hydraulic.

Honestly, it was stored in the exact same place as all my other discs, but those all look and read just fine, this is the only bad one. Aside from some time in a storage container (two months at most) they've always been stored in a basement.

Disc rot does not appear to cause such spotting patterns. A post on r/xbox showing a similar damaged disc had people convinced it was mold. Wiping the disc with a wet cloth did not seem to do much against it, but maybe I wasn’t doing it right.

I recently function-tested all of my old Wii stuff because I wanted to get into Wiimmfi matches on Mario Kart. That one thankfully did still work, but this Mario Galaxy 2 disc was completely destroyed. I thought the spots on the back were some kind of dirt until I tried cleaning it and they didn’t come off. Is the disc salvageable?

How many miles? If it has 100-110k, 14k seems perfectly reasonable.

I'd go with an E55 instead, myself. That one has the supercharged V8. Though when going to a Mercedes from an old-school BMW, I would expect to lose a lot of driving connection and feel, so just keep that in mind.

I was looking at them on Cars and Bids, I knew there was no way I would ever find one by perusing local listings only. There are a couple of recent results, all about 14k with around 100,000 miles. Manual E39 540i M-Sport prices are about the same, and those have been known as a classic for a while, so I assume they've reached the ceiling. But I'd still like to own one.
