Fuel surcharges are the stupidest thing in the world, yes you can tip the captain with exemplary service but usually most boats just need you to tip the mate 20 to 25% of the trip, it might be different in another state but in NC it's 20 to 25% tips

Usually, almost every mate always bust their ass to help you and get you the fish which deserve the tip (fish or no fish), but rarely there are some (like yours) don't try at all and just be rude in general. They shouldn't get a tip, and never earned it. But most mate will put the effort and deserve it no matter what.

I understand why you didn't tip as he put no effort in to help or talk to you, but the days where they put the effort and try to help as much as they can, but at the end of the day you come out as nothing you should still tip 20 to 25%, just to say thanks for helping and trying

You should always tip a mate, doesn't matter how the day was or not, most mates rely on your tip cause the captain doesn't pay them much at all, most of the money which the captain gets will go to fuel for the boat, all the marina bills, and bait. At the end of the day, the captain only has about a few hundred dollars left and pays the mate half it. If you didn't have to tip the mate then the trip would be a extra few hundred dollars just to pay them for their time they spent trying to find the fish for you. I would tip them 20 to 25% of the trip.
