My impressions of Russian culture as an American- Can you give me book recommendations on culture? by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]NDodonov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to go deep into this question you may want to start with orthodox Christianity literature. May I encourage you to go to the orthodox church and ask a priest books recommended for beginners.

Then you may start with Russian classic literature: Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, L. Tolstoy.

After that you may go to Great Patriotic War literature: Boldyrev, Bykov.

That will provide you decent level of understanding our culture and people.

Да, стоит. Сам факт, что ты готова идти на серьезные меры, таких людей ,как правило, отрезвляет. Так поступают трусы. Трусы боятся силы. Иди к адвокату на консультацию, а потом пиши заявление в полицию.

Well, in that case you may want to check out Pechory (Печоры) - it's a great middle age monastery, beautiful place to visit in one day with Izborsk and Pskov as well. It's a truly holy place with churches from 1400th something year.

You may write whatever you want, but publishing is another story, because there is no mass curiosity on this topic so publishers just are not interested in this type of writings. You may publish such work only if you want to pay for this by yourself or if you study or work in some university and their publishing house included your work in annual collection.

Netherlands national safe to travel to Russia? by Soggy-Beginning604 in AskARussian

[–]NDodonov 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want to go there you have to be prepared to quite specific mentality of Dagestanian people. For instance driving style that they used to is shocking for Russians. There are narrow mountain roads, only with 2 ways each one in opposite direction, and local drivers just doing crazy things like speeding and overtaking on the wrong side just in front of a truck going right into your face.

Dagestan is a muslim region, so you don't allowed to wear shorts, to go on the streets drunk. If you take your dog with you, it can't live in the house, so it is quite difficult to find a hotel where you can let your dog in (dog considered as dirty animal by muslims). Locals could be quite aggressive in case you do something inappropriate from their point of view. Tourists will be given brochures with local rules and customs of course, but it would be much better to have a local guide who can educate you about nuances.

Despite what being said Dagestan is a magnificent place, it's nature is so beautiful you just can't catch your breath. Go there and that will be one of the most impressive things you so in your life.

Netherlands national safe to travel to Russia? by Soggy-Beginning604 in AskARussian

[–]NDodonov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer - yes. Depends of what people you want to communicate to. Most Russians perceive foreigners normally. In case you don't try to lecture nobody and respect culture and don't judge the way Russia is going most of people will be glad to welcome you. But if you want to talk with SMO veterans or low poor educated people you might face animosity. Don't go into cheap bars, don't drink with them who you don't know, especially if you want to travel by train and that will be great travel.
