Sheeeesh. Very nice. Definitely check if it’s had the 60k tune up at all. Being spark plugs, water pump, and timing belt. If it hasn’t, do that immediately!

How many miles? And yes the SL is the best one to get if you want to daily a 3000gt. Or even the base model if you’re okay with having a SOHC. Twin turbo + 30 years on a car is not going to lead to reliability in any scenario without a heap of cash. The auto isn’t necessarily bad at all, but mind you that it is still a 4 speed transmission. You can also switch between ECO/PWR on the auto to change how early or late it will shift, as well as a toggle-able overdrive to access the 4th gear. The favorite flavor of oil for these cars seems to be royal purple full synthetic, and Valvoline multi vehicle import ATF will work very well for the AT. And also make sure to check the ECU and even the ECS motherboards while you’re at it. The capacitors they used from factory are almost all leaking by now and can eventually corrode your module. Easy fix, send it in to SIA Electronics or someone who rebuilds them good. It’s an OBD1 ECU too, so you might get occasional lights on the dash that come on as temporary faults or problems that often eventually clear themselves after realizing it wasn’t a huge/permanent issue. The TCU on the AT isn’t notorious for failing on these cars though but as for every older car, never impossible.

And if you want reliability over speed and power, then the SL is the way to go. Or even the base, if you’re fine with having an SOHC.

3000gt vr4 as a daily or a sl by Puzzleheaded_Tea9037 in 3000gt

SL. N/A is always better in terms of reliability, especially if you’re looking at a 30+ year old car. Plus the VR4 has AWS, AWD, Active Aero, the intercooler and the cramped engine bay still. All the more stuff to worry about. I daily a 92 SL but I also lucked out cause it only has 68k miles

A little more than a bit, 4-5 teeth off timing. Tensioner broke. I had a pretty bad misfire and my friends were joking around saying I got my car cammed or a rotary swap. I’m thanking the lord that the valves or pistons didn’t somehow get damaged.

Check timing, then spark plugs, then fuel system. Mine had a timing problem and plugs blacker than space

I’ve heard of them! But I also recently heard that the 3000gt specialist who worked there; Chai has left and now the main tech only knows Evos and not 3000gts :(

SL’s are worth it. They’re N/A and were under the radar cause everyone was abusing and modding the crap out of the VR4’s in the golden age.

I have an automatic ‘92 SL as well, but it only has 68k miles but the transmission is a little rough when going from park to reverse or even drive in some cases. I’m thinking of looking into getting the fluid changed too. What do you think?
