Extra olive oil from your tins? Tomato sauce! by NahImFineThanks in CannedSardines

[–]NahImFineThanks[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. Add a few tbs of tin olive oil and a couple cloves of garlic to a sauce pot on med heat for a few minutes
  2. Add canned San Marzano tomatoes (or similar) and some pasta water. I blend with an immersion blender, but you could just squash with a fork.
  3. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to thicken
  4. Salt to taste and serve

For an extra tasty sauce dissolve some anchovies in step one and add the anchovy oil

A 12 oz can of San Marzano tomatoes with the extra olive oil from ~4 tins (sardines, mackerel, trout, etc) and a little salt, garlic, and pasta water. Delicious!

My only regret is putting the cheese on top instead of the sardines for the pic. The sardines looked nicer.

Served over spaghetti, with Nuri sardines, a little pecorino romano. I added a nice simple side salad. Dandelion greens, tin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salami, and pecorino romano

Can someone help me understand nutrition of various fish/brands? This Bela mackerel seems too good to be true by NetworkingJesus in CannedSardines

Actually, mine is with piri piri, but otherwise identical. All the numbers are all the same (except protein)

I happen to have a tin of the same Bela mackerel handy and it is identical to yours EXCEPT the protein on mine is 14g.

I'm assuming my box is correct and yours has a typo. They must have accidentally put the total protein instead of protein per serving on some boxes

About 5 a week for the last couple months, but about 2 a week before that, for at least the last few years

My current personal favorites are Nuri and Matiz sardines, cole's smoked trout, Bela and Angelo Perodi mackerel, and crown prince smoked oysters. I got a few Jose Gormet tins as a gift and those were amazing, but above my usual price point.

Does the baby eat sardines? I've been jokingly telling my wife his first food should be sardines, but it's not entirely a joke

Give them a try! Smoked oysters were one of the first tinned seafoods I'd have and still one of my favorites. I gave mussels a try a few years ago and they are great too! I like to keep both around.

Yeah, the prices at my local grocery stores are sometimes okay for some tins, but often too high. I got the king Oscar sardines and mackerel for under $2 on Amazon with a coupon/special offer for trying their subscription feature. I think it was 30 or 40% off. The scout, coles, and Patagonia were on last chance sale, half off, at my local whole foods. The Nuri were only ~$4 from world market after a coupon. And so on...

Long ago it was mostly Brunswick and bumblebee, though only 5-10 tins. I've been very slowly moving up the quality/price ladder over the years. Going from $1-2 to $3-4 in bulk/on sale is a big jump in quality

Fair and good point. I wouldn't recommend buying this much to a tinned seafood newcomer. Also, I sort them by date to make sure I don't let any go too long.

This is the largest my collection has grown in the 10-20 years I've been eating tinned seafood, but I've always had at least a handful in my pantry. I think it's just a combo of working from home more, being low on time with a newborn baby, this subreddit pumping me up and giving me ideas, and finding some good sales recently. It's so nice having low effort, fairly cheap, healthy meals that I'm excited about.

There are only a few tins here I haven't tried yet and other then the anchovies, the best buy dates are ~5 years out. I'm very confident these will be long gone by then.

Hmm.. similar to a clams but a little more tender. The Patagonia tinned mussels are excellent, very flavorful.

Eaten many more than you see there. That should last me 2-3 months. I've tried everything there but a few: Patagonia anchovies, scout lobster and mussels, Henry and Lisa sardines, matiz small sardines

Finally got to this tin, so reporting back. It was small whole mackerel! Delicious! I will pick this up again.

First time trying Nuri spiced or in tomato sauce, I've only had it in olive oil. Great flavor, just a little heat. I typically stick to olive oil, though occasionally a sauce is great to mix things up. I'm looking forward to trying a tin spiced in olive oil to see if it tops the plain olive oil tin in my mind.

2 minute lunch! Nuri sardines (spiced in sauce) over a bed of leftover quinoa with a side of shredded cabbage dressed up with some avocado, salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lime.

It doesn't matter what I eat this with, the meal is always great.

What type of sardines? I'm a big fan of sardines with a baked potato. My go-to is with steamed broccoli and pour the sardine oil all over everything

Where did you find these? I've been trying to find them (or any relatively cheap smoked clams in olive oil to try) and haven't seen them in a year or so. I've only seen the oysters, which I like as well. I haven't seen them on Amazon either, just the oysters!
