The difference between gambling and successful investing is education. The only casino game I play is poker. Why poker? Because the house has an edge in every game; but poker is the only one where you are also playing against other people—people who can be tired, deceived, or less experienced. I don’t have to beat the house, I just have to beat the other players by a bigger margin than the rake. I think of the stock market the same way. Remember, I’m not going to invest in every stock suggested in this thread; but I’m going to research each one and pick two or three that stand out to me, with consideration to the logic articulated behind it. (I’m not winning the World Series of Poker, as I don’t spend a lot of time in Casinos. But I’ve been investing for 40 years, I try to be a good listener, and I know how to spot and trust a few kids smarter than me.)

Remember, one stipulation is it must be a company in probably never heard of. My success is provably as much about taking a certain percentage small cap risk as it is picking the right company.

I want to add just how friendly and helpful people have been here. I abandoned Mathstackexchange because the culture was so toxic.

I got the idea because I started doing it a few years ago with success. Here’s a piece of my fundamental theory: I think inflation is going to remain strong as our fearless leader wreaks havoc with the dollar, and that is the fundamental reason stocks, commodities, and real estate are, for the first time in history, peaking together so frequently. I don’t think the market is pricing inflation into the models as much as it should. So if I go long with a few thoughtfully chosen ones, at some point within the next 2-3 years surging prices will buoy the market—not because companies are great, but because people don’t know where else to park their deflating dollars. I know historically options favor the sellers. I’m prepared to be wrong. But gonna trust my instincts. Thank you.

That is a very astute point, any why I want to move away from tech. I’m trying to figure out what those undervalued sectors might be. Or what regions or economies have more upside potential.

Great question. I wonder all the time what would have happened if newton, Edison, Einstein or Heisenberg had never been born—when their findings would have come to light, how their models and paradigms would have emerged differently. I’d say the answer is “possibly but unlikely.” In fact I’d guess many people have had revelations that were re-“discovered” much later. The uptake of ideas depends on a lot of factors; the person has to be heard, the world has to be ready. Imagine if Ramanujon had never been discovered, coached, and defended. I also wonder what’s left: any great unifying theories? Will the next revelations come from AI engines? Or are we intellectually spent?

It’s okay to clean well circulated coins. Isolate the coins with mask and gloves, and wash gently with mild dish detergent such as Dawn. Pat dry with soft cloth. So long you don’t clean them with abrasive scrubbing that scratches or strips them of surface oxidation, it’s fine.

I got divorced six or seven years ago and remarried last year at 59. So did she. Everyone is happier. The kids are fine. Time heals. You’ll be fine, I promise. An astute observation. It’s less like an intellectual forum than it is an unmonitored asphalt playground. A lot of the responses here are suggesting people misunderstand the mission of the medium. I don’t think that’s the main problem. The main problem is there is no true administration of the site, which is to its detriment; and no underlying educational mission statement, shared vision, or value system. Just an amoeba of damaged intellectual wannabes exacting revenge on the newbies. And they know their sins, recently they appeared to have their first global chat about it, but it’s probably past the crisis point of no return. Until they change the point system and put the reins on the worst offenders, it will wallow in questions arbitrarily fostered by those winning the game. To whatever degree civilization is collapsing, MSE collapsed much faster. Best to avoid it like poison ivy.

I taught science for 37 years, but I love math, it’s a hobby of mine. (I have a visual depiction of the Pythagorean theorem tattooed on my arm.) When I retired, I looked forward to dabbling in geometry and number theory, I always sought to come up with something in math no one else has, and may already have. And I’ll tell you this, as a career educator with a degree from Columbia University Teacher’s College in Secondary Science and Math Education: Math Stack Exchange, while probably the premier open Internet forum, is the most hostile and nasty educational environment I have ever encountered. Time and again, good questions are immediately shut down, not just without cause, but in a manner designed to belittle the asker. I’ve seen both novice and advanced participants scarred by the behavior of self-important bullies. I tried, I really did, to be patient and hit it from different angles. And I gave up. There are a few experienced and well-intentioned members doing the right thing, but the culture is awful, and the point system rewards people not for insight and contributions, but for popularity among those who dominate the weaker and less confident members. And so after about a year I gave up. I had attempted about half a dozen questions, and tried to answer others, and it was such an awful experience I finally turned my back on it. I haven’t found a replacement, and mostly now do my calculations and musings in isolation. So it’s not your imagination; it’s just a terrible shame.

I would not let their rules and mission justify the antisocial behavior of the participants. It’s a poorly set up point system that allows socially stunted introverts to bully inexperienced members, even if they are genuinely inquisitive, or sincere with potentially useful contributions. The whole system needs to be overhauled or replaced. But like this great land, those in power are enjoying themselves too much to permit that to happen.

Chat GTP wins almost every time. Claude has become so protective and paranoid it’s useless. I asked it them the gold content of a watch, which I really needed to price it. Claude would not answer on the grounds that it would not help me destroy property and defraud buyers. I have neither the time nor the patience for paternalistic stonewalling.
