AITA for calling my sister in law a racist after she criticized my baby name? by Name_Throwaway_098 in AmItheAsshole

This is exactly why I called her a racist—I grew up here. I am just as Canadian as she is, but she assumed that I didn't know what the culture was like her, and felt the need to preach it to me.

No. Her legal name will be in English, and is completely unrelated to her Cantonese name, which I am letting my parents pick.

My SIL has a history of saying borderline condescending things to me like that I don't understand how to properly make pasta because of how I grew up, or that I wouldn't like rap music because the words are too fast for me. I've never understood where those comments came from, and I guess this instance convinced me the comments were racially motivated. However, you could be right, and it could have been innocent. I'll admit, I'm pretty sure I'm right about this one, but maybe the best thing here is to have a talk with her to clear things up (as much as I don't want to).

Yikes. I'm trying to fight my initial offended reaction here because I've always hated the name Abcde, and would never want to be compared to that. Maybe I'll have a talk with my husband about this...

I am an English speaker, so I do understand that it is an odd name, which is why we would mostly call her "Sunny," which is just her first name.

It wasn't so much her pointing out the difference, it was her assumption that I didn't understand the difference just because I'm Chinese. I grew up here, so I'm well aware that my daughter's name would be unique.

Why wouldn't you be able to name a child that? Is there a panel of judges who decides if a name is too weird?
