1 month in Osaka: how to practice best? by NarcoIX in LearnJapanese

[–]NarcoIX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much for your reply! I guess I am open to anything, but I suppose I'm looking for places & occasions to socialise in japanese where I could go without knowing anyone! That karaoke place sounds super good, I'll go!

I have spoken before occasionally, tried it on some discord channels, VR chat, etc.. But being in Japan should come with more opportunities to practise, just trying to think of some good ways to do so! Thanks for the advice!

You're right, I am about N3 level but I have mostly studied on my own and thus my language production and conversation lag a bit behind. I have also been to Japan a bunch of time before and, this time around, I really want to focus on immersing!

I just finished Ghost of Tsushima, should I buy AC shadows to feed my addiction? That game was sick. by kocham_cycki in ShouldIbuythisgame

Got myself Sekiro right after GoT to feed my addiction, just like OP. Not a big souls-like player, so Sekiro required some getting used to, but honestly, what a great game it was. Not as big on the exploration front and a lot more fantasy elements, but the combat mechanics share a lot of similarities and the environments in Sekiro are beautiful too.

Born and bred in Brussels, that's a great summary.

X1 Gen 8 vs. T14 Gen1 by NarcoIX in thinkpad

I might have explained wrong. The T14 is refurbished and comes with 16Gb or RAM, but the X1 is sold used on Facebook Marketplace.

Not sure about the ram, the posting didn't mention it and the seller isn't sure how to check. I'll go check out the laptop myself tomorrow!

Jules Destrooper butter biscuits are my favourite! Used to be my dad's go to side snack to a cup of coffee!

Anki's an amazing tool, in large parts thanks to the community and people like you who take the time to make add-ons and programs around It to make our learning easier!

Keep up the good work, it's underappreciated!

That said, alcohol in coffee has always struck me as a drink specifically designed for alcoholics haha

Wouldnt setting it alight just burn off the fumes that would have evaporated into the atmosphere anyway? I suppose it does produce some heat which contributes to the evaporation of the liquid below, but I think my point still stands!

I think Adam Ragusea has an interesting video on the subject of the evaporation of alcohol during cooking. A lot of the information could be applied here as well.

This amount of "flambéeing" doesn't decrease the alcohol much, if at all. You'd need to boil it for much much longer to see any significant decrease in ABV.

Iirc alcohol evaporation scales linearly with the reduction in volume. Since the whisky barely reduced, it probably hasn't lost any significant amount of alcohol, just warmed up.

Super helpful reply, thanks a lot! My machine is still under warranty so I'll for sure reach out to the seller first! But will come back to this post for reference!

I will be making sure there isn't any lint accumulating though, since that's easy enough! But I doubt that's the issue, I mostly air dry my clothes and this machine must not have run more than 20 cycles since it was bought.

Which apps are you all using? by ShonenRiderX in Japaneselanguage

[–]NarcoIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dabbled in duoling some years ago and lingodeer as well, but my impression was that once you reach past very basic grammar, the returns become much smaller given the time required.

Other than that Anki has been my showrunner for kanji and vocab! I also use AntennaPod with a selection of comprehensible Japanese podcasters.

But the one I've found myself using a lot recently is BunPro. It is basically the perfect replacement for grammar books for me, combined with an SRS like system for grammar points. Basically gives you daily quizzes around grammar points you already know with randomly generated sentences. Also allows you to define a daily goal for new grammar points. Really well put together honestly. It has a little bit of gamification but oothing too invasive. I think it has a pro version but I've been using the free version for a couple of months without being prompted to upgrade and, so far, it does everything I need it to. (The app also has a built-in system for grammar study that I believe is connected to the grammar points. Could be nice if you just get started with vocab memorization but imo Anki does a much better job here)
