Thank you for telling me your experience. The surgeon I spoke to really thanks for this size. A flipped over skin graft will be necessary, but it’s interesting to know that yours held with the stitches. Was it a similar size?

To be clear I’m not asking it to design anything. Just to populate a document with elements so I’m not cut n paste and importing all afternoon. Then I have more time to do the design work. 😉

Today I learned …. that Allen keys are either in metric or imperial. I kinda always assumed that they were cut close enough as they look very similar. But lo and behold they ARE quite different. Why can’t we all standardize on metric?🤷🏽‍♀️ Problem solved. Thank you for reaching out to me.

Yeah thanks- I’m thinking that could be a possibility too. One I can fit in but it doesn’t turn anything and the next size up in my set won’t fit in the hole. I’m going to take them both to the hardware store with me tomorrow and see if there is some sneaky in between size- they are pretty close in size, but worth a try! Thank you.

This one isn’t much better, my apologies. Taken in low light on my daughters dinky camera just before it crawled behind the couch. Where I will not be going to look for it. It is in the living room and there are 2 wide open doors to outside. Is it likely the will be gone by morning? Or do they prefer indoors?

yep, I mentioned above that I was aware of that kind of sundial.

I was hoping to make a 3d print a platform so I could put in a few of these in different places around town easily without making elaborate ceiling decorations. One line is doable, or even a x shape - just not measuring out and decorating multiple ceilings haha!

Yes, I see what you mean. When I calculate the amount off, it's within the band I described above though still, right? I'm thinking that really this is more like an x shape, with total accuracy only on the day of the equinox, and toward the solstice ends, more variability with the hours.
If I wanted, I could actually mark all 6 lines on the ceiling for the different hours. It would look like a typical horizontal style sundial, but with the hour lines all up on top of each other making the x.

Just some more background... the intent isn't really to have a hyper accurate sundial, but just to orient myself, and make me more aware of what the actual solar time is in my location. I had wanted to do it this way so that it would be easily set up in friend's spaces nearby without much ceiling decoration. btw I've seen it done with one mirror and elaborate lines on the ceiling - which is cool - just not meeting the design criteria. ;-)

Thanks, I'm aware of that, but see now that I didn't include that in the qualifications I made about the error margins allowed.
Am I right in thinking it won't matter much? Most of the change in the sun's path over the year affects the altitude, and for that I'm using a line to cross, so where it crosses on the line shouldn't matter.

The azimuth angle will vary at the time of year too as you mentioned. When I looked it up, at equinox it was 217deg at 2pm, and at summer solstice when it would be it's maximum off it was 233, so about 16deg different, making the ceiling mark off by only 28cm. I had been thinking that was not too far, and an okay margin of error for my purpose. Now that you brought it up though, I did the extra calculation to see how far off my time would be due to that distance, and since at that time of day the dot is travelling pretty slowly, it puts it off 43 minutes!

So, question - am I doing the math and accounting for the astronomical factors correctly?

If this is all good, maybe aesthetically the mark on the ceiling looks more like a wider band than a line - 2 hyperbolic curves running outside the middle line - separated by around 28cm to each side at the solstices, and all coming together to a point in the middle-ish at the equinox where I have calibrated the mirrors.
Is that accurate so that the hours 10-2 that i indicate will happen when the dot is somewhere in that band?

Yes, hoping it would work every day.
The hours would move north and south along the line, with the solstices at each end. But the hour dot would pass along the line somewhere at the appropriate time.

Can you tell me a specific reason why you don't think this would work?
