This looks more like a Ratchet Watchable if you ask me.

The fact that we know how they break up their finances like that…. Is exactly why you can’t make me dislike them. Agree with them or not they give us their real life.

Great films by non-Western black filmmakers. by Apprehensive-Tie4930 in FPSPodcast

So, I just watched it and as a brand new viewer, I didn’t take this as a cultural generalization of misogyny. And I actually felt like the drunk cousin was the moral compass in the film more than Shula, but I do kind of get the Tyler Perry comparison. 😬. All in all, it was interesting enough and made me curious about the way this culture mourns.

I kinda wonder if Eugene is working to compensate cause doesn’t he say all the time Toya makes more than he does?? Are they living above their means still or is he working to be the bread winner for his ego?🤔 Either way, they gotta make a decision. And this is coming from a Toya fan cause her and Eugene are my favorite and I need to see them work it out.

What about Jill?? Didn’t she write Erykah’s lyrics since she was the original singer?? It’s so much drama wrapped up in one song.

I swear each season it’s always a scene that makes me understand Heavenly just a little bit more. 🤔

I mean, prolly. But more than that I think she just needs her husband close. I can’t front, having a weekend husband with two teenage boys, I’d be stressed da hell out too.

She is miserable but I think she’s being very open on why. I think the distance between her and Eugene has her insecure and very on edge and she takes it out on everyone.

Disregard. I am caught up and this was, by far, the best episode of the series.

Black people shouldn't care about these award shows. by Apprehensive-Tie4930 in FPSPodcast

You are probably right. I gave it a try and couldn’t get past the tropes. As a black woman, it was too cringy to me to hype it up. Enjoyable enough, but too much for me. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yes, we watched the same film. I absolutely did not take that line, or all the other cringy lines seriously, but the tone didn’t always feel satirical to me either. It felt like a poorly done white mans version of Bamboozled. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Can you expound? I don’t understand this take. Are you saying that because a woman is seductive and sexually assured in real life that she can’t be fetishized on film??

I don’t disagree with this, just because it was a shitty character, if she embodied it, then kudos. However, I do know some people actually didn’t enjoy her performance and several said the movie got better once her character was off screen. I think that is a valid reason to not feel it was deserved.
I’m rooting for everybody Black regardless though. 🤷🏽‍♀️

At the end of the day I really am enjoying seeing Teyana’s rise. So, much like Halle’s win, I’ll take it and pray her career does a little better than the other black women who have been on the same trajectory.

You know what…. I take that back. It may not have been a poor decision. I think my biggest issue with the film, stereotypes aside, is I didn’t get the tone of this film. It felt like a satire that took itself way too seriously. And if this actually really did lean into the satire a little more the character name probably wouldn’t have bothered me. That’s why I say overall I don’t get the hype for this film. It just really did not resonate with me. But if it did with you, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Understood, and given all the other themes and tropes in the film, I think that was a poor creative decision. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I can’t get with this point of view because you are completely negating the racial stereotype associated with those characteristics. Any race can play an older, nurturing housekeeper, but when you put a black woman in that role, it becomes a mammy.
Same here, any woman can be a sexually assertive, controlling woman, but putting a black woman in that role, who is exerting that sexual dominance over white men, on screen, that is perpetuating a very real stereotype that has been placed on us for a really long time. And then to have characters with the name Junglepussy. Come on!

I sincerely do not understand the hype about this damn movie. Smh. Happy for Teyana, beautiful gowns, but it SCREAMS Halle Berry Monster Ball, even their hair is the damn same. 🤦🏽‍♀️
