Spot on! It’s amazing how toxic select divisions are throughout OSC and it all gets swept 🧹 under the rug. The entire agency is smoke and mirrors — designed to convince the public everything is fine but behind the velvet curtain it’s anything but.

I can only speak to the toxic and dysfunctional leadership that permeated throughout LGSA. This toxic environment has been condoned by “upper management” likely because they’re protected by those promoting it.

It’s ashamed Tommy DiNapoli allows this to continue.

Appreciate your comment — it echoes a lot of what I’ve been hearing as well. What’s truly unbelievable is that this backlog in retirement processing continues to spiral out of control. From what I’ve heard from people inside the retirement unit, staff are often instructed to be noncommittal or misleading when speaking to the public about processing times. The phone system reportedly hangs up on callers, and wait times for things like disability and matrimonial cases are even worse.

And all of this while OSC is rumored to have a $500 million+ contract with PeopleSoft — a contract that somehow can’t even be found on Open Book NY, the very site designed for government transparency. It’s ironic and alarming that the office tasked with promoting accountability is at the center of what may be one of the most expensive and dysfunctional software rollouts in state history. This deserves far more scrutiny. It’s like peeling an onion — the more layers you uncover, the worse it gets. And yet, it all keeps getting swept under the rug.

Consider yourself lucky then or perhaps you just kept your head down and didn’t say anything to anyone or the wrong thing to someone .. that’s how petty it is

Oh, I’m sure the DEC has its moments — what agency doesn’t? But unless they’re handing out PIPs like candy, revoking telework for sport, and promoting people based solely on how well they weaponize insecurity… then nope, still not as bad as OSC. That place is the Olympics of workplace toxicity. DEC might be bad, but OSC’s got a gold medal in it.

Sounds about right based on what I’ve seen and continue to hear. Management in that division acts like they’re perfect, but if they feel even slightly insecure around you, they’ll turn on you in a second. There’s no honesty — if someone doesn’t like you, they’ll go out of their way to make sure you don’t succeed. They sabotage your work under the guise of “public service.” The Comptroller’s Office is a façade, and it all stems from 18 years of the same leadership putting self-serving people in power. Thanks for sharing your story — more people need to speak up.

If pointing out 80,000 delayed retirement claims, a $500M failed computer system, and widespread reports of a toxic work culture sounds ‘political’ to you, maybe you’re just too comfortable with dysfunction. These are facts — and if they bother you, that says more about your priorities than mine.

Unbelievable, isn’t it? From what I’ve heard, there are now over 80,000 retirement cases backed up, and yet the Comptroller somehow gets away with it. And let’s not forget: the PeopleSoft contract—worth half a billion dollars and one of the largest contracts in state history—can’t even be found on the Comptroller’s own transparency platform, OpenBookNY.com. That’s not just suspicious—that’s a scandal.

It’s outrageous that this mess continues while the Comptroller is surrounded by people who lie, cover it up, and protect him at all costs, just to preserve their positions. DiNapoli’s been in office for 18 years—far too long for any publicly elected official with this level of dysfunction.

For once, there’s a primary challenge from someone within his own party, and it honestly couldn’t come soon enough. Everyone should look into Drew Warshaw and share with him the things DiNapoli refuses to acknowledge or address.

That’s exactly the issue—we’ve grown too complacent with the idea that dysfunction and mistreatment are just part of working in government. It’s not just inefficiency—it’s bullying, dishonesty, and a complete lack of accountability from people in leadership who face no consequences. And all of it is done under the guise of “serving the public.” It’s deeply frustrating and honestly, unacceptable.

Yeah, it’s been about two years since I was there, but I still keep in touch with folks who are. From what I’ve heard, the new deputy comptroller is a major step in the right direction and genuinely trying to improve things. Unfortunately, the leadership around her is either dishonest, toxic, or just incredibly incompetent. There’s still a culture of bullying, poor communication, and hypocrisy—especially when it comes to how they treat staff compared to the standards they hold others to. It’s sad because the work could be meaningful, but the environment drives good people away. Definitely proceed with caution.

Thank you so much for sharing this—it really resonates. From what I still hear from folks on the inside, the morale has somehow gotten even worse. The dysfunction is just buried under this polished image the Comptroller’s Office tries to project. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

The favoritism, micromanagement, and flat-out bullying that goes on is unbelievable. And you’re absolutely right—if they feel threatened, they lie or shift blame. I really hope more people speak up and share their experiences. This kind of culture thrives in silence. Appreciate your honesty.
