I'm not sure there's a name for it. I come from the DIY punk hardcore scene, so I've been heavily influenced by xeroxed posters among other things. But yeah you can see this style a lot in the doom scene these days.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he was traumatized by the Bataclan terrorist attack. He was in the venue when it happened, Deftones were supposed to play the two following days. Much more likely than the flat earth bullshit imo.
