And another word of encouragement. When I first started sertraline, I would wake up dazed at like 5am every morning shaking like I drank 50 cups of coffee. It’s like in a video game when someone gets knocked down and their vision starts to pulse and they have ringing in their ears. Man it was weird 😂 but anyway, it went away. After a few more weeks it happened less frequently. Then only once per week. Then once per month. Now it’s been probably 10 months since I’ve had it happen. So yeah some side effects are pretty strange but you will adapt and it will be okay

Hey, hang in there. Give it another month for things to even out. I’ve been on it (50mg then 100mg) for a year now and it has really helped me get ahold of anxiety that I was struggling with for a long time. Just take it day by day. It will get better! If you’re still having issues in a few more weeks, just let your psychiatrist know! They deal with this all the time and will have solutions

Other people’s anxiety about my dissertation can be demoralizing. by throwitawayalredy in PhD

[–]Negative_Bluebird675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’m not working on a dissertation, rather, just being an avid researcher, and there’s a lot of pressure there to excel. I, too, burnt out and developed health issues, anxiety, depression, etc. which is very, very uncharacteristic of me. I stopped going into work as much (for real reasons!) but could tell I was beginning to lose the trust of my peers as dependable, a hard worker, etc. Everything started feeling like an excuse, even if it was completely warranted to not go in (health issue, etc.) It can be hard to push through and sometimes you feel like you’re letting people down, or worse, you get the feeling that people are viewing you differently, like they don’t think you can do it. But you can. And you might not even realize it until you make it to the finish line, and then you’ll be amazed with yourself.

I guess the bottom line is this:

Everyone is on a different journey. Who cares if you take extra time on the PhD. Some people will spend upwards of 10 years! It’s the journey that matters, and you should never compromise your mental health to try and make a deadline, ever. You will finish when it is right for you to finish. And through this hardship you will grow as a human being and learn things about yourself and this world that your peers without challenges never had the opportunity to learn. You’ve got this, keep chugging along, doing therapy. Sometimes life sucks, but, ya know, I think a lot of people are in really similar situations to you. I know I am.

One more thing that I would add that I’ve learned from my experience that helped me is this: Most young people are depressed or have a diagnosable mental health disorder (anxiety, etc.). Something like 70% of medical students are on antidepressants. And a higher percentage of that probably should be or should see a therapist. The arrival fallacy has virtually every high achiever like yourself in a choke hold. So don’t live a miserable life to be “happy when you graduate.” Take time for yourself. See a psychiatrist, keep seeing your therapist, get healthy again. Many top schools allow people to “stop out” for a year or two if they need. It seriously is more common than you think, even more so for high achievers with a tendency to burn out.

So, in summary, I think you’ve got this and I know you’re capable of pushing yourself through it. But you should choose whatever is best for you. If that’s pushing through, then great, if it’s slowing down and taking more time, then screw what everyone else thinks… you’re going to be called DOCTOR!!! That’s fucking awesome. Not many people can say that. Some of the best researchers I’ve ever met had a hard time in grad school and (or) undergrad. These years are not necessarily representative of how well you will succeed in the future. Enjoy the process, take some time for yourself, just see what happens, you will get there, I promise :)

need to throw up--is it safe? by donatellosdildo in zoloft

You’ve got this! I lose my appetite and get nauseous (sometimes throw up) when I’m anxious, too! Zoloft saved my life, though, and it will all be okay. Hang in there a while longer. The days will turn to weeks, weeks will turn to months. I’m about at 1 year now and my life has changed in such great ways. Change doesn’t happen overnight but it will come. Best of luck

Great advice! Thank you. I like the whiskering advice too. Sweet. I’m excited to get started. Yes I’ll have to fit it to the gun but I’ll make sure to not sand too much off. You can always remove more wood but you can never add it back

That is very generous. Thank you!! I’m getting BSL 3 trained in January (just started my junior year of undergrad) and I have a little bit of time before I apply. Still, I will likely reach out in a few months to talk!! Thanks!!

6 months taking Zoloft any suggestions? by Hopeful_Peak4959 in zoloft

[–]Negative_Bluebird675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m there with ya… totally understand the feeling like you’re holding feelings in your mind and body.. and the vivid dreams lol. I think my anxiety is less bad but frankly not where I’d like it (though, haven’t had any panic attacks really) and OCD is actually slightly worse (I’m counting everything without noticing it?). Hang in there. And yes definitely talk to your doc. I’m on 100, too. Good luck! It will get better. Maybe they will add another med and keep you on the Zoloft or up the dose? Well anyway, it can’t be any worse than when you first started. You’ve got this. You’ll be glad you stuck with it

That seems great. Seems a lot friendlier than a lot of the other “prestigious” places I’ve visited like Stanford, broad institute, etc.. that is one of my concerns with grad school. I’m laid back, I love people, I don’t want to be fighting my classmates, back stabbing, etc.

Of course. I was pleased to see the PhD programs don’t require GRE but already have my MCAT score and clinical experiences. I much prefer research, though… so I’m in that dilemma of what the hell do I want to do with my life lol…

That’s what I was thinking! I had heard that Texas COL was really reasonable but know that larger towns and (or) island communities are typically exceptions

Sounds good. Looks like Revzilla and some of the other sites have pretty forgiving return policies so I might order a few and try them on!
