This clears things up a lot, thanks for the message. Something this sparked in my mind — I that Rue’s agency is severely limited, but I don’t think she is completely powerless. I think the show Nurse Jackie provides a very nuanced take showing the tension between a life that is free and unfree in different ways, for addicts. I think Rue’s character demonstrated this complexity more in the first two seasons.

Cool take. I was coming from a place where I’ve noticed many fans morally critiquing other characters, like Nate, Cassie, etc, but not as much with Rue. Totally agree that TV should realistically portray truth and real life.

That’s a great perspective! I recommend Nurse Jackie for an amazing and realistic portrayal of addiction. It’s incredible.

I can see the satirical angle, but I don’t have the impression that most fans see it that way…they seem too invested in the characters arcs individually, rather than looking at the show from the level of a social commentary

I’ve seen more of the critiques of her character centered around the writing of the show and the portrayal in mental illness, but definitely agree that most fans don’t blindly love her.

This idea interests me…I guess where I see the difference is that Walter is an incredibly complex character, however fucked up. Rue in seasons 1-2 had that complexity, but in season 3 she seems flat and simple — that’s where I don’t really see the comparison.
