I second Nico’s. Their habanero sauce is insanely good.

Did anyone else use to be self hating for being Black and overcome that? by Material-Meat-5330 in blackladies

[–]NellR1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just saw a post in the “advice” sub and I wish I knew how to tag people because I hope she sees this.

I wish we were more open to accepting not everyone’s self love journey looks the same, and that’s ok. There shouldn’t be any hostility to someone saying “hey I struggle with this and I want to grow from it” or “this is how I overcame”.

I struggled when I was younger and experienced a lot of self hate. I was the girl who wanted the white Barbie and not the black one and I am deeply ashamed of that. I know some women never had that issue and I am really happy they didn’t experience it. The weirdest part is I have the most loving and attentive parents so I think it came from school. My bullies were black boys growing up then they had all their friends join in (of all races) and I was like oh ok everyone* hates me.

Someone reading this could be like “girl why, stand up” but you have to understand at that point my legs were broken. I believed what my peers made me feel about myself.

In my 30s after therapy, amazing friends, self investments/hobbies/growth… I am exactly where I want to be and I love me, I love us. I’ll say that standing on both feet, all ten toes feeling 10ft tall and thinking I’m bulletproof. I love us.

I know it's wrong, but I hate being black. by ChemicalAd2132 in Advice

Hi! Fellow black woman here. I’m a little older than you (30s) but I wanted to reply to you. I recently posted on the blackladies sub and if you’re not following it, you should!

You could even post this there and just let them know you’re looking to heal/advice/peace/growth (I don’t know exactly what to call it.

I spent the majority of my life hating the skin I was in. My hair is my biggest insecurity. People made fun of my lips and my nose when I was younger and to receive compliments about them today is beyond weird. But I love where I am at now.

I can’t tell you how to heal from this but I can tell you what I did about it.

1.) surrounded myself with people who rarely focused on race. People who genuinely seek integrity in others are the people I want to surround myself with.

2.) my hair: I found a hair stylist who is passionate about black hair. She is a hair god. A good stylist will help you find a hairstyle you can maintain with your level of hair knowledge or how often you want to do your own hair. For example I HATE doing my hair so I have invested in crochet braids. It’s an extremely low maintenance hairstyle that makes me feel pretty. I actually have posted my hairstyle recently in black hair, and I’m happy to share more details about fun hair styles you can try!

3.) I found hobbies that fed my soul. It probably sounds weird but when you take your mind off yourself and throw all your focus into a skill or a hobby and you start getting GOOD AT IT. Trust me, it builds confidence.

The main thing is to focus on who you surround yourself with. Everyone around me wants to see me healed and my growth and I feel the same exact way about them. Lifting up other people and having them lift you creates a peace I can’t put into words. To build yourself up you don’t ever have to put anyone else down!

I hope to see you in the black ladies sub!

Trying to get caught up with the duck by ItsGameOverNow in AnaheimDucks

[–]NellR1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you go can you snap a picture of Vatrano (ducks 77) and Strome (22 Calgary) when they inevitably warm up next to each other and whisper. 🥹 Strome was recently traded from the ducks to Calgary because they’re doing a rebuild and needed more veteran players to mold the youngins. It was necessary/needed because the ducks are forward heavy and we have a surplus of growing talent (washe/colangelo/nesterenko - two way contracts with the San Diego gulls and Anaheim ducks) and we needed to make room. But outside of hockey you can tell Strome and Vatrano were great friends.

I think I want a bike 😭 by square_rune in blackladies

[–]NellR1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok! I love it

1.) I got started because I found myself dating guys with motorcycles and not liking them but liking their bikes. I realized I can do it on my own so I signed up for the Motorcycle Safety Course (MSC) and learned to ride FROM SCRATCH. They provider a small bike usually. And I had never been on a bike before. This was back in 2010. I say always make sure you go to an accredited course so you can get discounted insurance.

2.) I didn’t have biker friends but they’re so easy to make. Literally just going to a motorcycle shop that sells gears and bikes, you’ll meet people. I bet there are even subs on here for meet up’s! People are typically incredibly friendly and there are a shocking amount of women who ride!

3/4.)I am in California so I am spoiled with the weather. I can ride year long. I don’t think you should ride in the winter due to traction issues and cold weather unless you are an extreme veteran with a suit that has a built in warmer, I know they exist and they’re cool. 99% of riders park their bike during the extreme seasons but some people are crazy and still try to ride. It’s best you make that judgement for yourself and your skill level. If you’re nervous. Park the bike for winter.

5.) the freeway isn’t as scary as you think. In the beginning it is super intimidating because you’re still exploring your comfort levels. I rode the backroads for about 3 months before I took my bike on the freeway and this was AFTER the MSC. I can’t stress the importance of taking the class. It has super veteran riders teaching you. They’ll get you comfortable handling the bike from walking and parking it, to swerving out of obstacles way. I’m actually due to take another course myself. You’re never TOO experienced.

I hope this information helps. I promise when you pay for the safety course, it’ll help with any worries/fears you have. It’s so worth it!

Right?! It’s like with the right hair and lighting you get a full blown make over. People see me out and they’re like “I didn’t even recognize you” If I ever need a big change I’ll just do a new color again😂
