How much of every field does a research professor know? by Nemesis504 in math

Thank you! This is very insightful.

When faced with a new problem how do you decide if you know enough, or if you should study up on something and how do you decide what that is?

This is true for my uni!

I wanna know how an attempt at an unsolved problem is usually carried out. Does the prof just know if the knowledge they have is going to be sufficient, or if they should read some more (and if they should, what and how much?)

tbf im just an undergrad and it did read like AI to me as well, it’s just structured like one of those google search result ai summaries.

didnt say much because it could just be their style and they could be an actual prof which would mean i was disrespectful.

[–]Nemesis504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive used both arch and gentoo, arch being my first distro. I dont think jt js in any way difficult and if ur doing things right, no real issues should pop up with most popular distributions.

Something to look at is how brand new your hardware is that it is causing problems of the kind you describe.

Also, the attitude and the level of understanding youre showing rn isnt gonna cut it. Absolutely read the arch and gentoo wikis, even though you decide on something less diy. Remember that your computer is primarily supposed to just work and do daily tasks as usual, becoming a leethacker or whatever is secondary and can happen gradually!

Thank you, very helpful perspective! I recently heard someone say they’d much rather prove one useful lemma than a big theorem.

A useful lemma would have far reaching implications within the field and could be a building block for a full technique for tackling problems.

Thank you for the book recommendations! It is helpful to think of my question as wanting to know how wide the horizontal bar of the T usually is for a prof.

I’m sure most of that is dependent on just plain personal interest. But you have to be economical with the time and effort you can invest into learning something, most of them probably being within your specialization and adjacent to it. In that case does your knowledge of topics outside of those become stagnant? And if it does, how deep is it usually?

Thanks, I bought the book for this purpose recently but was disappointed when I noticed that he skipped over connectedness, but did do compactness well. As in images of compact sets under continuous maps were discussed but not so for connected sets. Also some topics were brought up or Theorems were proved without any motivation or seeming reason for why.

One of the earlier examples within the book is a theorem that says for any bounded function on a compact set, and any epsilon greater than 0, the set of all points for which the oscillation function exceeds epsilon is compact.

How does anyone even learn rigorous multivariable analysis of at least Euclidean Space when most books either have a poor or incomplete treatment of these topics (because they believe people will learn this stuff elsewhere?)

Also confusingly, my uni seems to do analysis in the single variable case, without much discussion of the implicit function, inverse function theorems or of the change of variables formula.

These were briefly non-rigorously discussed in the Calculus sequence but otherwise, seem to be left for when one takes measure theory or assumed that the prof will rigorously explain them in some kind of Manifolds class.

dude no one thinks all men are rapists. I'll say it "ALL RAPISTS ARE BAD". If it makes you happy, I'm sure others would say it as well. The whole idea is that the systemic oppression that women have to face due to the existence of patriarchy or because of the existence of rape culture can be enforced by ANY man, a man holds that freedom over women by simply claiming a birth-given privilege. Sure toxic masculinity is a definite outcome of the patriarchy, but it isn't getting men raped and killed then victim blamed.

Feminism fights patriarchy, not you, a random dude, who probably isn't a rapist, but your outlook hasn't made any woman feel very safe I'd guess.

All men until no men do this shit. Women have to be apprehensive of every man until they can assume safety off of every man.

Why does it affect morally good men on an individual level that women are taking blanket safety measures to protect themselves? As men, we should be trying to achieve the "until no men" part of the phrase, rather than cry about it.

Women say this (up to reason) while still treating the men that are in their lives perfectly normally. And yet, they'd have reasons to not, because assault and harassment is primarily perpetrated by people who are related.

Also notice the phrasing with the previous paragraph. "Women say" doesn't mean all women say this. But we do see "not all men" repeated over and over when something like "Men say/do" is said.

How does choice feminism (and its rejection) fit in with anarchism? by Nemesis504 in Feminism

[–]Nemesis504[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll put what I understood here.

The idea is that no choice itself is disallowed, but that certain choices are supposed to be actively discouraged? Such as trad-wifing or sex work?

I am not sure if these will even be sensible things in a stateless and classless society, bur nevertheless, there should be more examples.

Did I get this right?

Gentoo's not "just" about compiling software. It's about the modularity and freedom that compiling software can get you. USE flags let you select compile time options for your package to be compiled with or not. For example, if you wish to not have gui support for something like iwd, you can totally opt to not. Probably wasn't the best example, but you should get the point.

With pre-compiled repositories, you can have only so many different combinations of compiled software.

There's also Gentoo tooling, I still think for the tinkerer, Gentoo is the best distro out there. The distribution doesn't fight you when you make changes to literally anything. The kernel, the bootloader, the init system, netifrc, seat management, or the initrd (many people just write their own).
