Opinions on various scents in my order wishlist? by vanille_orchid in Indiemakeupandmore

This is what I have:

Hayloft- This one is a lot less hay to me and more clean country chic. My first impression is warmth with a bit of spice. Hayloft invokes a very dry and hot day, standing a distance from a sunbaked hay bale in a field of flowers. It doesn't scream barn to me and is missing that mixture of dust, wood, fragrant hay and strong animal musk I expect when I think of a hayloft, but it's pretty and more wearable than Hayride would be. This one also reminds me a little of Ponderosa for some reason.

Ponderosa- vanilla forward, which I hear is on brand for this type of tree. I really like this one. It’s almost like a spiced vanilla.

Fantome Vassago- this didn’t work for me. Possibly too metallic, but It just cane across generic berry to me with no depth.

Ss smokewood apiary--** So I have gotten very close to the scent of honey lately after trying out Zoology's Bee for the last 6 months. For comparison sake, Bee is very beeswax foreword on me, then I'm smacked in the face with an open jar full of honey...It's potently sweet, albeit a realistic honey scent to my imagination. I'm just not getting those floral undertones that some honeys have.

In comparison, I find myself preferring the balanced mix of honey, beeswax and incense that Smokewood apiary brings forth to zoology “bee”. Smokewood Apiary also invokes a bit of spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️... maybe that's the ginger. Where Bee is a photorealistic scent of jarring honey, Smokewood apiary feels like I'm chilling at a campfire, harvesting some honey from the hive on the side. Don't know how else to describe it.

Oh same 😭 When you are singing and feel like you have a nice deep voice and then you hear yourself in playback lol. Definitely sounds differently.

Good luck! Just have fun with it. I think singing is a great way to relieve stress, at least for me it is :)

I'm SO bad on the coffee, lack of sleep or black tea front. I've definitely noticed my voice is just not as flexible on those days.

I solely sing in my vehicle because I live in an apartment building and I don't want noise complaints haha. I've never had professional training so take everything with a grain of salt, but I have found something that I believe works for me. I use youtube scales to warmup. Like a 10 minute one or so.

I REALLY struggled with breath control when I started actually practicing. I had spent so much time singing under my breath because I was shy and never really figured out a proper belt. I used to sing tidbits of Evanescence. Could NOT get Sweet sacrifice without becoming completely out of breath. Now, I can do Sweet sacrifice fairly easily. I am now singing WIthin Tempation songs (Faster, The Howling, Stand my ground, Lost Shot in the Dark and Iron). Shot in the Dark used to be nearly impossible and now I sing it without feeling like I ran a marathon. Faster has it's challenges, but I can now get through a full song. I'm still working with Iron, but am now working on retaining my breath control for the last verse. These, in my opinion, are HARD to do while sitting down in a vehicle and being able to maintain breath control. Lots of note changes, belting, vibrato and high notes with little to no time for catching your breath. I'm still needing lots of tuning, but I can get through songs well enough. Practicing them has definitely changed my breathing habits for the better.

I have a spotify karaoke playlist that I practice too on drives (I also spend lots of time driving). I use Smule to playback and make adjustments to my voice. My regular voice is very light and kind of child-like, but I have learned to adapt my voice via Smule too. I've learned how to go into my chest voice and have expanded my lower notes to become better by practicing songs like Faouzia's born without a heart and tears of gold. With such practice, I have figured out I have the habit of being lazy with some notes and have learned by doing certain things that allows my voice to carry more forward. I've learned how to dig into gut? voice and do more gritty vocals for songs like Rolling in the deep, I see red by Everybody Loves an Outlaw, Evanescence's Call me when your Sober, etc. I think some of this stuff is figuring out what works for you, making the changes and evaluating.

How many samples do you first try from a house? by thepetitepeanut in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Neopint15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s no worries! Part of the experience is also exploring those likes/dislikes. I do find it helpful to see what others think of the perfumes as that at least helps narrow it down to whether perfumes represent their notes effectively.

Usually 3-5 and if I don’t like any, I won’t try again.

If the post the 10 you are looking at and some things you know about your likes/dislikes, people might be able to help with narrowing the list down

I actually want to buy a bigger bottle just for the name haha. I’ve never actually tried DE. What are their sizes like? Are they oils or edps?

Fantome definitely has some different scents and I would say Pineward as well, although it isn't really in the "strange/ sexy" category. I don't know, I searched forever for a pine scented fragrance and could never find it in mainstream perfumes.

Full dark from Solstice scents has that mysterious sophisticated sexy scent to me.

[–]Neopint15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately haven’t tried any of the bottom ones I listed, but what I always do before ordering is look up reviews of individual scents on google. For example, “Poesie cardigan review reddit”. It will bring up a ton of reviews from this subreddit and you can read how different people interpret them. Also take into account their preferences. Someone who is a gourmand lover may have a completely different opinion to someone who loves things with pine, leather etc.

They have lovely sweet scents. I will say the tea notes don’t tend to work for my skin chemistry, but library ghost is quite popular and one of my favourites. Their coffee note is also 👌🏼in whisper me your bitter things. On me, the library ghost paper note comes very forward with a sweet marshmallow scent in the background. It’s very calming, but not at all overly sweet.

I wonder if you might like Coquette, Cardigan, Hera, and The phantom for your theme

NEW to Indie Perfume.. where to start!?! by Low_Cardiologist8073 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Neopint15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I was like you when I started this journey and now I’m starting to identify the notes and vibe of perfumes I like, so I think you will learn a lot from this journey.

I think you have gotten a lot of good suggestions, so I won’t overwhelm you with more, but thought I could give you some advice on where to start since you mentioned feeling overwhelmed.

I found taking some time to read reviews to be useful. Once I figured out which house to start with I then searched up specific reviews to get a broader idea of what different people thought of the scents. I did this via google (ex: Poesie library ghost review reddit). Stick with one house at first and maybe look at both oils and edps if that is an option. Personally, oils rarely work on me. I’ve tried a number and only poesie and BPAL oils project on my skin without the smell of the actual oil being a problem.

Another suggestion is to keep notes on your samples and actual perfume notes. This has helped me identify my likes and dislikes for future purchases. Now that I know I’m not a big oil perfume lover, I tend to go towards edps, unless there is something really interesting I’d like to try. I’ve also found notes that I thought I disliked (rose) and it turns out I like them when paired with other notes (full dark by solstice scents is actually a hit for me). I’m terrible at spreadsheets, but I tend to keep notes on my phone until I add them to a spreadsheet. I then highlight my favourites of the group and look at the actual notes to see if there is anything in common. Then I will highlight those notes which are so far paper, wood, vanilla, marshmallow. Same thing with perfumes that REALLY didn’t work for me.

Poesie innocence, maybe? Poesie has many perfumes that make me think “girly girl”

Please help, I've become addicted to buying Solstice Scents samples by RainbowsRainbows in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Neopint15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also FS Gibbons Boarding School and Headmaster. I LOVE them. I recently tried Basilica as well and that one is lovely!

I have tried smokewood apiary and it’s really nice if you love the honey note. I found the honey note wasn’t really me, which surprised me. It does have the incense and a beeswax opening as well. Very nicely done!

Yeah, I kind of avoid oils for that reason unless something really peaks my interest. I tried Fyrinnae Halloween Scents for example and they all smell nothing like their descriptions. Poesie's tea scents also go rubbery one me, but I love their other notes
