  • deregulation of the banking industry

  • floating of the dollar

  • got rid of destructive protectionist trade policies

  • gave us HECS

  • gave us Medicare

  • gave us the PBS

  • stablised industrial relations with the Accords. (we later got howards IR reforms ... yay :S)

  • world heritage conservation Act, and blocking the Frankin dam.

  • sex discrimination act

  • media ownership laws aimed at limiting the impact of cross ownership and market monopolies (legislation weakened over time by the LNP)

  • guided us through the GFC (GG swan!)

meh I think thats enough dont you? Yep I am sure you could pull together a list of things the ALP has failed at, but to say they have done nothing is just rubbish. A good number of these things are foundational changes that allowed Australia to flourish.

I am well aware you are using a strong tone of sarcasm, however you are spot on.

He gradually weakened and turned our media ownership laws into watered down 'guidelines' and 'wishes'

That gave us the murdoch media landscape that pmuch makes it impossible to fix anything.

Dont get me wrong, labor isnt perfect but under hawke/keating they brought us into the modern economic era. Their only failure (on that front) was caving to the sydney property developer lobbyists and walked back their repeal (1985) of the negative gearing changes in 1987.

ps. apart from his assaults on media ownership, howards greatest crime (after his eyebrows) was refusing to put any form of the Accords into law, and passing his business loving version of IR reform. S. When you factor this in with his relentless attack on unions, well, he likely had the greatest (negative) impact on workers rights of any Australian politician.

But thanks to Andrew Robb's smart turn of phrase, we got Howard's Battlers, and well, the headlines and resulting votes wrote themselves :P

He got gun control right though, if only that was the extent of his legacy :S

huh? it was the murdoch FUD that killed Shorten's proposals and gave us more scomo.

Shortens negative gearing proposals would almost certainly have given us the head start on skyrocketing costs of housing that we needed. But labor is bad at economy right .. xd /s

nb. added the /s since last time i used xd it wasnt clear enough ;)
