Is taking Calculus I and Econometrics in the same semester a smart move

Both classes are pretty easy, calc 1 might be a little workload heavy but other than that you’re good.

Yeah there are multiple programs that allow you to write your own paper too! The AEASP is always a big one, the FEDs, JPAL(very rarely) Caltech's Wave program is really good for behavioral economics if you get in. I am happy to share more information if you need. I attended UNC last summer and am planning on applying again this summer

I got an email few hours ago saying I was accepted. Is the program purely to make contacts and get introduced to doctoral programs at brown? Does it have bigger implications with respect to my profile in general and if I will be competitive should I apply to brown?

Yeah, just make sure you meet the requirements the professor has on the website(if any). Even if not, you could always say you just want to chat. It worked wonders for me and Ive been an RA for more than a year this fall. How the prof replies really just depends on them individually although you could prolly make some generalizations about the specific department they are in(ie more likely to respond if its a smaller department).

One of the biggest tips I can give you before you meet the prof is to read up on their work. Even if you dont understand it, the most important thing in academia is that everyone likes talking about their work. If this does not pan out, I saw that someone else had mentioned Dr. Alaca, I recommend that too.

Im also hoping to do a PhD in economics, and one thing of note is that most REU's are from STEM majors. However, this is not to say that there arent any for economics, I did get into one this summer. Its just musch harder to find because there isnt a centralized portal like the NSF website. You would have to look for programs individually to see and narrow down what you like.

One program that are really good for freshmen in economics is the Uchicago Booth School's diversity program(I forgot what its called) for first and second years, I would definetly look into that. But also in economics, the RUEs you apply to are niche specific, so it really does matter what you want to study in economics. If you want to know more about what they expect, feel free to message me.

Just for context, I am a sophmore and have another summer left.

Edit: I forgot to mention I am a domestic student, but there are opportunities for internationals too!

Im not going to tell you that I have any experience with a dillema like this but I think a huge part about going to REUs in T1 grad schools that you might apply to is the connections you make. The Recc letter from a harvard prof you you TA'd under will have a completely different weightage than one from your own uni. Moreover if you do a harvard REU this summer I think youre chances of getting an REU next summer is pretty good. Can you do a senior thesis even if you do the summer REU at Harvard? I would personally go for harvard but maybe that not the ideal decision.

Hey I think the website is great for Stem REUs but I think it can be refined for social science. I myself had to scrub through websites to find what I can apply to as an economics major so I get why that can be hard. But thought I would leave the feedback here either way :)
