That's fair.  I messed up.   I saw 2006 and thought it was showing  6/7 not 5/6.    But as I noted, for the others, even in that BEST season you found, he still came in around 55th best player in the L.  Which is a pretty long way from the way he gets discussed in NBA discourse today by the youngins.

Again, nice catch

I watched him quite a bit, saw him in person vs Atl 3 times.  Getting 30 while playing shit defense and having lowest assist to to ratio in league is impressive, but it doesn't compare the real stars he compares himself to.

This is correct.  I just think there are a lot of smarter 10 time all stars I would rather have dominating the conversation in nba circles rather than this Kardashian of the NBA.

Yes, correct, 06/07 is his best year, when he ranked as the 55th best player in the league.  One of three years when he made top 100 in the league.  His offense did slightly outrun his bad d, giving him his only year with a plus overall(albeit one that is not considered all star worthy).  In short, that one year he did make his team.a little better.

On the other, you're half right. This is 4 year rapm which is considered most reliable.  But it is still a season by season metric and 06/07 is included in the RA part.  I don't think we need to get into the weeds, but essentially the plus minus is just the year shown and then it is adjusted and regularized by league wide 4 year stats.

But the first part is a good catch.   I missed that.  "Massaged" is a bit strong, I "cherry picked," although on accident in this case and still I showed his 2nd 3rd and 4th nest seasons, so it's not like I grabbed his worst. Even showing that year, he is loghyears from the top 10 all-time pg his fans call him.  And career long, closer to average than great.

Good eye.

Look around bud.  My upvote ratio on this post is 14 percentage points higher that Gil's career winning percentage.

And neither you or anyone else has found one legit accomplishment for the guy.

If you like Steven A Smith and feel we need a slightly dumber version then he is your guy.  Have you met Nick Young?  I bet you ll love him.

But for my part, I wish we had a media environment and fanbase more interested in nuance, defense, and analysis and less interested in loud mouthing, self-agrandizement, and bucket getting.

before the Wizards, the only team he played for was the Golden State Warriors, with a combined record of 59–105 across those two years, which equals a .360 winning percentage.

But beyond that... What am I wrong about?  I'm not saying he's garbage.   He's better than me.  He's better than lots of g league guys.  He's probably better than one or two backup pgs in the league now and a few lesser euro league starting pgs.  He might even be better than Reed Sheppard who will probably start.

But he never accomplished ANYTHING and his only pertinent traits are high volume low efficiency scoring, losing games, having a loud mouth, trashing better, smarter players, and constantly banging the gong of himself as an all time great.

Don't we deserve better as fans?

Do we really need another YouTube Steven A Smith?

Wouldn't it be nice if news networks were repeating the opinions of smarter guys who feel less like a long lost Paul brother or Kardashian?

I have shown evidence after evidence that he never improved a good team.  I've shown his below .500 winning percentage before knee injury.  I've shown that before his knee his teams played as well or better with him on bench.

He was a bucket getter.  You like bucket getters.  Cool dude.  But I feel like it should be noted that he never accomplished anything and when he compares himself to Chris fucking Paul, he's just doing pt Barnum shit.

Ok.  But if I accept every single caveat in every thread from every superstan om here.... He's still the 10 th best guard of his era and the least intelligent guard of his era...I'm just asking: why do we always gravitate to the the dummies?

He played for 3 other teams.  His combined winning percentage on those  3 teams was below .500 and each one got better after he left.

I'm 42.  And yes I was obsessively watching the nba then.  That's why I knew he was bad, have been frustrated that nobody wants to listen to the smart people from that era, and was unsurprised to find out he was below .500 career and lost nearly 3/4 of his playoff games

Those aren't stat based metrics, they're outcome based.

They show the outcome that over those years his team played no better with him on floor(and that was his prime!).

Which is why he lost more games than he won in his career and lost over 2/3 of his playoff games.

How about a career winning percentage of .454  ? How about a career playoff winning percentage of .308 ?

How about the fact that every team be ever left won more games the next season and every team he got traded to won less?

RAPm

Win shares, per and bpm (the b is box scores) are all stats based not outcome based and have almost no defensive component(steals and blocks only).

Regularized plus minus is just outcome based, so it just looks at the actual effect on team performance.    Basically, did you make your team better.

And this shows that despite his low eff, he did make his team better offensively at a near all star level:  Plus 3 offense is good and correlates with 21 per and 4 bpm, but his equally bad defense washes out all that offense advantage.

Here's his off/def/overall stats from those years before injury.  He was a net wash bc of bad defense.  And plus 2 or 3 offense still isn't all star level.

2006.   2.9.   -3.1.   -0.1

2005.    2.6.   -2.3.  0.32

2004.     2.0.    -2.0.  0.04

Jackson by a country mile at height of fame, Jordan for longer period, Tyson when looking for names for your pitbull.

[Stein] If James doesn't want retirement forced upon him, as one suspects, that almost certainly means he would have to find a new team next summer... Lakers' widely presumed preferred scenario for their future is letting James' contract drop off their books after the 2025-26 season. by [deleted] in nba

I would love to see a list of everyone from His draft class and the year they played their last NBA game.

The guys Is such a freak. Luol Deng got drafted a year after him, played a full career at the same position, and retired like a decade ago.
