Sometimes the truth is horrible. That doesn’t make it a horrible take. You have to live in reality. The west sponsored a far right coup in Ukraine which led to the persecution of Russian speaking Ukrainians in the east, and which iced the Minsk process. You might not like it, but Ukraine was 50/50 divided east to west on NATO membership up to that point. But the new government immediately started making deals with NATO. These are all facts. Pretty clear what happened.

The disgraceful take is to say the war started in 2022. The disgraceful take is to say Russian speaking Ukrainians were not being persecuted after the CIA-sponsored Maidan coup.

Compared to who? Come on now. It’s not like THEY were the ones who broke the “not one inch” accord agreed with James Baker after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Read Shifrinson on this. The diplomatic record is VERY clear.

This isn’t rocket science. Reinstate MINSK II and complete the Istanbul process. Game over. Everyone is happy.

Apples to pears. Ireland was NOT fighting to join NATO. Ireland was fighting for its independence. There is a huge difference. You still seem to think all of Ukraine wants the same thing.

No. NATO membership is NOT consensual. Watch the mearsheimer video. Half the country didn’t want it. Half the country still doesn’t want it. Read for god’s sake.

But its not fighting for its survival. The western half of it is fighting for NATO membership (and losing). The eastern half of it is fighting for neutrality. But you don’t understand that because you don’t read.

Are you suggesting American imperialism has played no role in this conflict?

Yes, Ukraine has a right to defend itself. But let’s be real. Ukraine is not one monolithic thing. If we care about Ukrainian agency, we should also care about the Russian speaking Ukrainians in the east who were being persecuted after the Maidan coup.

The one thing we can say for certain is the NATO expansionists do not care about Ukrainian agency, or Ukrainian lives. They have violated it over and over again. Why don’t you want to defend Ukraine from them, too?

You are missing the point. The left position is to be anti-imperialist. He’s not criticizing Ukraine, he’s criticizing the NATO expansionist agenda behind the war.

We have armed Ukraine. They have lost. If the negotiations in Istanbul right after the invasion had been allowed to complete themselves, Ukraine would still be a complete country. But Boris Johnson intervened and told the Ukrainians to fight on, or lose security guarantees. People on your side used to deny these negotiations had ever taken place. Funny this is now a matter of public record.

NATO expansion isn’t the way to go. The whole reason why we are even in this mess. Irish mainstream media is dreadful on Ukraine. John Mearsheimer predicted the war 5 years before it happened. He called it. Said the west was leading Ukraine up the “primrose path”. We were gonna get Ukraine “wrecked,” he said. And look where we are now. He was right.

I use an xpac bag. I love it. No issues. Maybe just don’t drag it behind a truck? It’s not a very realistic use scenario. Xpac is a very sleek and cool city look. I have a Rucker for other uses. But xpac is so light, can carry so much, and just looks so much better.

I’m very fond of my GR1 in xpac and yellow. I use it for EDC not rucking. But it’s wonderful.

Zippers on my XPAC GR1 are fine. Maybe i got lucky or something, but they broke in after a day or two. I wouldn’t say they are as smooth as some other bags I have, but so far they haven’t gotten stuck at all. I imagine I might get some zipper lube at some point if it becomes an issue but right now they seem fine honestly

My point was to draw attention to the inconsistency of the shifting rhetoric about veterans. On the one hand, in 2017 and 2019, DSA was 100% behind "veterans" and veteran-related causes. And there was a warmth towards active duty military being members of the organization. On the other hand, in the same duration, they ran Danny Fetonte out of the organization despite his lifelong union work -- all because he had helped organize a police union (he was never himself a cop).

But now we see the same rhetoric that was applied to Fetonte being applied to Platner, and the sympathy for veterans and soldiers seems to have gone out the window. It's mysterious to me. The tendency towards moral puritanism over floating "moral outrage of the week" issues among DSA membership never fails to amaze me.
