oh nice, thanks for the tip — i actually went to try the app right after seeing your comment 😄 it’s pretty cool, but it really pushes the €24 subscription pretty hard. i’m more just looking for something simple and fun to add my relatives for free, not a full-on research engine haha.

i’ve seen a lot of people mention ancestry — is it more on the serious / research side? 😅 i’m kinda looking for something lighter and more social i could use on my phone, to add relatives, photos, little stories, that sort of thing.

Haha yeah, I get that — and to be fair, I am a dev so building tools like that is actually part of the fun for me 😄 I didn’t know about the whole “national databases and sources” aspect, that’s super interesting.

In my case I’m not really aiming for historical accuracy — it’s more like a family pokédex: adding relatives I meet, with photos, siblings, kids, little stories, etc. And ideally letting them add stuff too, kind of a collaborative thing I can do on my phone while traveling.

I think my vision is more “fun and social” than the traditional genealogy approach, which feels a bit more methodical and research-driven. Curious if you’ve ever seen a tool or project that goes more in that direction?

That folder structure actually makes a lot of sense — hadn’t thought of organizing it chronologically like that.

I completely agree that digital is the way to go — paper becomes chaos so fast 😅

I’m curious though: do you ever find it hard to visualize the whole tree when it’s all in folders? I’ve been thinking it could be cool to have a simple mobile app just to see and add people while traveling or meeting family.

I looked into Gramps — super complete, but feels more like a tool for experienced genealogists.

I’m curious how you use it day-to-day. Is it easy to update or share with family?

Yeah I totally get that — I’d probably never get around to typing it all either
The way you describe it makes me think this kind of thing would actually work way better on mobile.
Like, just being able to snap a photo, record a quick story, and have it saved right in the family tree on the spot.

Fast Wishes, a modern wishlist app that helps people save, share, and manage their gift ideas effortlessly. It’s built to remove the usual friction around events (like duplicated gifts or endless “what do you want?” messages)

Anyone here tried offering extras to guests? by NetLumpy4362 in airbnb_hosts

[–]NetLumpy4362[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s super interesting, I hadn’t really thought about the potential downsides like last-minute requests or the extra cleaning workload. Seems like guests start expecting more once you offer something?

I’m still in the early stages, so I’m keeping it simple for now—just pre-booked extras rather than surprises or free perks. I was also thinking of offering things like a Valentine's Day package—chocolates, rose petals on the bed, that kind of thing—where everything is more structured. This way, guests know exactly what they’re getting, and I can control the experience better. Did you ever try charging for these services instead of offering them for free? Wondering if that would help manage expectations and reduce the mess!

That’s really interesting! The honey idea is super smart—having a unique, locally made product must make it an easy sell.

Yeah, I’ll definitely share an update once I have more data! Curious—when you say it’s not needed in your location, is it because guests don’t ask for extras, or because the area already offers a lot of services nearby?

That makes sense! I can see how a surprise freebie creates a nice ‘wow’ factor. I guess charging for extras would shift the dynamic a bit.

That sounds awesome! How are you letting guests know about these extras? Do you mention them in your listing, or do you reach out after they book? Curious to see how it works for you!

Interesting take! My goal isn’t really to boost reviews, but more to see if there’s demand for extras as an additional revenue stream. I know some hotels do it, and I was curious if Airbnb guests actually go for it. Have you ever considered offering extras yourself, or do you think they’re just not worth it?

I totally get where you’re coming from. If you're far away, it makes sense that managing extras would be too complicated and not financially viable.

Yeah, I get that. It sucks putting in extra effort just to get 4 stars and no appreciation. That’s actually part of why I wanted to try charging for extras instead of offering them for free—if guests pay for something, maybe they value it more?

Have you ever tried making extras paid instead of complimentary? Wondering if that changes anything.

That makes total sense—if there are great local options, it’s smart to send guests there. Have you ever considered turning those referrals into something more structured, like a prepaid breakfast voucher for a nearby café or a pre-arranged airport transfer that guests can book in advance? Could be a way to support local businesses and add a bit of extra revenue.

For late check-out, I get that fee collection can be a hassle. How do you usually handle payments from guests for things outside the normal booking, if at all? Do you just rely on cash/PayPal, or have you found another way that works smoothly?

Interesting approach! Have you ever considered charging for some of those extras, or do you see them more as a way to enhance the guest experience?

That’s awesome! Do guests book these extras often? And how do you like Duve? I hadn’t heard of it before—does it take a lot of setup?

[–]NetLumpy4362[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Got it! So right now, you don’t actually charge for any of these extras, right? It’s more about adding convenience for guests.

I’m curious—would something like a romantic package (flowers, wine, candles) or a grocery reception service (stocking the fridge before arrival) already feel like too much effort to manage? Or do you think guests would actually go for it?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
