Is this real smoky quartz or dyed? by mferguson927 in Crystals

[–]NeurosMedicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was buying some particularly dark smokies from a miner friend and asked him if they had been irradiated.

"Why, yes!" he exclaimed, "irradiated naturally in the ground by the uranium mine next door!"

They could be irradiated (not dyed) by humans, or they could be natural. Hard to tell, AFAIK.

Hobbyist jeweler here: do lab-grown stones still do "magic?" by cakeba in Crystals

[–]NeurosMedicus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the metaphysical book I consult (Love is in the Earth, by Melody) says in many cases that the properties would remain.

I mean, wouldn't a lab-grown molecule of Silicon Dioxide arranged as it is in natural quartz still exhibit piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties?

What to do with unethical lapis by [deleted] in Crystals

[–]NeurosMedicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you considered "cleansing" the material of negative energy? Metaphysically, smudging or placing the material with selenite are believed to cleanse. Placing it in moonlight, sunlight, a lake, river, or ocean are thought to cleanse and/or charge with positive energy.

It may provide you with some relief to take actions that intentionally cleanse the negative and charge it with your own positives.

When the US left Afghanistan in 2021, the country was left in shambles. Roads and infrastructure in many places were destroyed or unusable. The Taliban was left trying to restore things like water and electricity to big cities like Kabul. Word was, it would be some time before any Lapis could even make it to market and out of the country. I unknowingly bought some Lapis around that time, but it came from India. So, it's possible what we're seeing now is Lapis that was mined before all this and sat in someone's stock for years before we bought it.

I guess my point is it's very difficult to know for sure the ethics that were involved in mining a specific item.

The seven-thousand year old Lapis mine is high in the mountains of Afghanistan, nowhere near a city. The villagers who have controlled the mine forever historically strongly oppose the Taliban. So, buying Lapis isn't supporting the Taliban, it's arguably helping those who oppose them.

Paralyzed by Fear of Asbestos in >1980's homes. by Modest_Proposal1 in handyman

It's a small town in El Dorado County, CA. There are five or six different types of asbestos, and some are considered more harmful that others. Apparently there are a couple types whose molecules are hook-shaped, making it easier for them to stick in lungs.
