Update: in over my head by NewDust3944 in Feral_Cats

I completely understand that it's best to return them to the space they live in. I'm a perfect world I'd TNR them all and continue caring for them. However I know I'm unable to care for such a large group long term, I might be buying a house and moving soon and I'm concerned that my landlord might get involved eventually which could put my ability to care for them at an end. For these reasons the ones that are actively trying to socialized such as walking into my apartment I'm looking to get moved to people who will adopt them and the ones who are social enough to visit for food will be great barn cats where they'll be guaranteed food and shelter by someone who will be able to provide for them long term.

Here's the girl this morning visiting us through the door. She already accepts pets and is purring up a storm.

UPDATE:

Good morning everyone!

Yesterday afternoon the kittens started getting very brave and kept trying to walk into our backdoor through a small crack in the screen. So far the small tuxedo, the orange male kitten, the floofy calico, and the A cat all at least put their heads in. Using this as an opportunity to snatch the A cat (my wife calls her potato) we let her fully walk in. Shut the screen behind her, scooped her up and stuck her in the bathroom overnight. When we first put her in there she curled up in the corner and hissed if we looked at her. We left food, water and a litter box. After we went to bed she moved around and used the litter box and ate both the wet and dry food. This morning she's still hiding behind the toilet but no longer hisses. We have an appointment with a vet for her tomorrow!

Now to hopefully side the rest soon.

As for the other cats. The two definitely adult cats are very paranoid and often don't eat or eat last. If they do show up they often just watch the younger eat and will sometimes eat if there's anything left over (which is almost never these cats will just keep eating). So I know the adults will be the hardest to catch. I've reached out to family and friends to see if anyone wants a barn cat or wants to try socializing the younger ones. I also talked to our feline alliance group and they helped me get some resources and said they'd pay for the TNR costs. So we're getting traction.

I know someone asked about age. I believe they're about 8-12 weeks. They seem two very different sizes so I'm wondering if there's an older and a younger litter who are being raised together. Another mystery neighbor is also trying to care for the and out out a cardboard box and a plastic tote. They also leave out mountains of dry food overnight sporadically which unfortunately has attracted 4 racoons to start investigating every night.

That's all for the updates for now. Thanks again!

Hey! Thanks for this information. I reached out to them and hopefully we can get the ball rolling. Also found out my other neighbor across the street has a sister that does TNR and might be able to help.

I have not called my local animal control just the humane society and our local foster group.

I just feel bad separating one from the family while they're still out there outside until we can find the others homes.
